Commander's
Message

Greetings,
Here we are in the middle of August and the summer continues to go by.
I would like to thank Steve Hoelscher for being the chairman of our fair stand
and all the volunteers who worked as servers and cooks. We had a reasonably good
first year and made approximately $1,300.00 after expenses.
Also would like to thank Gary Anderson and Wes Halverson for heading up Gary’s
annual sweet corn and brat feed. Again we couldn’t have succeeded with this
project if it had not been for all the volunteers who picked the corn, cooked
the corn and brats and served the food. Our post would not be able to function
without the dedication of these volunteers.
By the time you receive this letter we will have had our post breakfast on Aug
23rd. This breakfast still continues to be a popular event and we are always in
need of more volunteers to help with this. Look for the signup sheets for this
and other activities on the door as you enter the lounge area.
The Honor Guard held their breakfast on Aug 30th in order to supplement their
funds. On Aug 26th we served food at the Farmers Market. This has proven to be a
good way to add extra income to our account. Again we can always use extra help
to carry on this function.
Any World War II Veterans that would like to go to Washington, D.C. on the
Honor Flight, we have forms at the bar you can pickup and fill out. Anyone that
knows of someone who is eligible for this trip be sure to let them know and have
them stop at the Legion for more information.
At the August 17th Post meeting, By-Laws committee chairman 1st Vice Commander
Bill Goette discussed the proposed changes in our post by-laws. Anyone
interested in these changes should ask Bill Goette, Arnie Mulso or myself for a
copy of the by-laws. The changes will be voted on at the September 21st Post
meeting.
Membership renewals continue to come in and anyone who knows of someone who is
eligible to join should encourage them to do so. Applications can be picked up
at the bar.
The building committee met on August 14th and discussed the progress made on
purchasing the property to the south of our building. We are moving forward with
this and at present are waiting for the abstract to be brought up to date.
Anyone wishing to contribute to this project can do so by stopping at the
Chamber of Commerce where a fund has been set up specifically for purchasing and
building. Again I would like to emphasize that at this point we are only
purchasing the property. The building and expansion of this site will come at a
later time as funds are available. Any questions on this can be directed to Dave Mullenbach or myself. The Building Committee consists of
Rex Stotts, Len Leland, Dave Mullenbach, Mick Jaquette,
Bob Inderlie, Wes Halverson, Arnie Mulso.
Looking ahead to September we are at the Farmers Market on the 9th, Post
meeting on the 21st at 7:00 P.M. and Post breakfast on the 27th.
Anyone with questions, concerns or suggestions should contact myself and make
me aware of these issues. We appreciate your continued support of our legion and
invite you to participate in the many activities that are scheduled here.
For God and Country
Rex F Stotts, Commander

Update
Where Did The Summer Go;
Wow; was that busy. The fair was very good for us, as it looks like we will make
around $1,300.00 after expenses. We now are the home for 3 Kiwanis clubs,
Mondays Noon Kiwanis, Thursday Golden K, and Friday morning Daybreakers, thanks
for giving us this opportunity. Also, on Saturday the 26th the club will be
closing for a private party, it is a wedding with over 350 guests and we will
need the entire facility, so I thank you in advance for your understanding.
Please look over the calendar there is a lot going on. We still have some
openings for Christmas parties. Remember to drive safe our kids and grandkids
are back in school. Also, we
will serve food until 10:00 pm on Fridays so you can eat after the game. GO
TIGERS!!!!!!
Thanks
Todd Utpadel

F.Y.I.
In last month’s publication I mentioned the possibility of Leo Carey Post 56
doing something special within the next few months to observe the 90th
anniversary of the American Legion in Albert Lea. So far, I’ve been
underwhelmed by the response from my fellow Legionnaires.
However, as I also mentioned, there’s a very distinct possibility this important
anniversary will be observed in a significant way by the Tribune. I’m not too
sure what this will entail, but there’s a guarantee that some post members will
be involved in this special salute to the post, its members and its history.
Meanwhile, let’s see what develops during the next several months.
Now, let’s shift the focus to another topic.
Last month’s publication was about a week late in getting out to the post’s
members. Yet, the deadline has always been the first Wednesday after the post
meeting. And for the five or more years I was the editor, my part of this
publication was taken to Church Offset Printing on that day or the following
day. Thus, the material for this issue is going to the printer on Aug. 19,
2009.

News
Welcome!
As we begin the 2009-10 year of this great organization a special welcome to our
new members. We hope you will join us at the Unit meetings. We meet on the
first Wed. of the month beginning on Sept. 2nd. The meetings begin at 7 pm and
usually last about an hour and are followed by coffee and conversation.
We will be again sending packages to our service men and women and are in need
of items to include. If you can donate items or cash please bring it to a
meeting or call me and I would be happy to pick it up.
Some
ideas: hard candy, socks, paper back books, beef jerky, flea collars, small
shampoos, lotions, etc.
The summer will have come and gone when you receive this newsletter.
Some of the Post activities we have helped with are Farmers Market and their
food stand at the County Fair. They will be at the Market in Aug., Sept. & Oct.
Stop by and enjoy the meals they serve and listen to our manager Todd
entertain.
Any questions about your membership or our activities please call. My # is
507-373-1761.
