Commander's Message

Hi Everybody,

I can’t believe summer is almost gone!  We must be having fun and very busy to let time fly by this fast.  Fall sports have started and school starts soon so slow down and watch out for kids.

First, I would like to thank Todd Utpadel for doing a very good job managing the club and after his review it was unanimous that Todd continue as manager in a permanent position.  Congratulations and thank you for the fine job you are doing.

Some past news is that we had 50 Korean veterans sign in and $150 was donated to debt retirement from this breakfast.  We had hoped more people would have showed up for Gary’s second annual Sweet Corn & Brat feed but 193 did enjoy the feed and fellowship.  Thank you to all the volunteers.  Our new oven has been installed and thank you to everyone that helped with that job.  Hope you had a chance to visit the Heritage building at the Freeborn Co. Fair to see Post 56’s display along with the Museum’s display of past war articles.  Also, thank you to West Halverson and Kurt Barickman for help and display plus Don Gross and Robert Fjelbroten for the tank display.  Thank you to Freeborn County Historical Museum for sharing the space.  The Honor Guard fish fry and Legion breakfast have not taken place yet, but I am sure you will have supported and we thank Bill Christenson for his great job as Squad Leader for the Honor Guard.

What is coming up at Post 56?  Please stop in and check out the club and have a bite to eat sometime as you will find the food good and the help very pleasant and helpful.  I’m sure you can find something on the menu you like.  Check out the Gopher football game information on Nov. 1st.  $45 will get you breakfast, bus ride to game (no parking worry), game ticket for Gophers again Northwestern, and 25% discount on your meal at the Legion upon return.  Game time is 11:00 am.  Please sign up by Oct. 5th so we can order tickets and determine if we can take a bus.  Don’t wait too long.

Post 56 plans on providing food and entertainment at the Farmer’s Market on Wed. Sept 3rd so stop over and have something to eat and listen to Todd our manager sing.  Don’t forget the 4th Sunday each month is our Legion Breakfast so spread the word and bring a friend.

What else is new?  Check the lounge out as it has two new flat screen TV’s.  These will help you to be able to watch Sunday football better.  You need to come in on Sunday and check out Todd’s specials for Sunday’s starting in September.  There will be a raffle for two TV’s and the proceeds will go toward scholarships (which we haven’t been able to do since gaming is down).  Come in and check it out for yourself instead of getting information by hearsay.

W.O.D. - Wipe Out Debt program is still being planned but watch for something happening in October.  Preliminary plans are for Sunday dinner, prizes, and music.  Any ideas, contact or leave a message at the club.  Remember if every Legion family member donated $51.26 we could burn the mortgage.

As you are aware we had to make a change for membership dinner compared to the past.  We are being blessed by having our banquet room used almost every weekend.  The board and Post approved a change this year to give each American Legion Family member a $6 credit toward any food purchase on any night at the Legion.  You will have until June 30, 2009 (end of membership year) to use this certificate which is the letter you received in the mail.  This benefit is for all current paid up members and if you wish just pay your dues when you come in to eat.  Thursday night dinner is a good choice and you can come when you wish rather than when the date was picked.  Please bring your letter (certificate) when you come.  Thank you for your understanding and enjoy a new food venture at the Legion.

Thank you to everybody who has been volunteering for events and projects for Post 56 and see you at the Club.

For God and Country
Dave Mullenbach

Club Update

Todd Utpadel

Greetings;

The Legion is very busy, we have our back room booked out for the rest of 2008. We have two weddings, a class reunion and a banquet booked for September. That is very exciting as this is a major source of income for our club. We have also installed two 42” colored TV’s to watch the football games on. We will be open on Sundays from Noon till 6:00pm for football games, starting September 7th. We will be serving food and have drink specials. Don’t miss the Viking-Packer Monday night game on September 8th, there will be prizes, drink specials, food specials. This is going to be a fun football season at the Legion.  In the month of August we had 8 players from the group playing Texas Hold-Em, sign up to be members. 5 SAL, 2 Auxiliary, and 1 Social. The players love the club and continue to show up strong, we are averaging over 70 players per week with both the Monday and Saturday leagues.  Plans have already begun for New Years Eve, be watching for details as this will be a reservation only event.  I hope you all had a great summer.

F.Y.I.

Last month we introduced a new section for this flyer called the Super Salute.  This was a way to honor citizens who have done something outstanding for the community, members of the armed forces, and/or Post 56. Thus, the first two people to be featured were Brie Cohen and Sarah Stultz of the Tribune Staff for their recent news articles and photos.

This month we have two more people to receive this specific attention.

Now, I can’t guarantee there will be a Super Salute every month, but with your help we’ll certainly try.

One way this new feature can be continued is for post members to make suggestions.

Please put those suggestions in writing.  Phone calls or conversations just won’t work, thank you.

There are two topics which will be ignored.  One is anything which will hurt anyone’s feelings or insult any citizen.  The second involves political topics of any type.

Okay, there’s the challenge.  Let’s see what evolves.

Auxiliary News

Greetings!

With the September meeting we begin our Auxiliary business year.  Throughout the year we receive many requests for donations of both money and time.

Money donated must be voted on by you the member.  The money donated is raised in various ways.  We have 2 salad luncheons this year.  These are our biggest money raising events.

The $18.00 you pay for your annual dues is also a portion of our income.  But, a portion of that goes to the Department of Minnesota.  Another portion goes to the District.  Come to the Sept. meeting and our membership chairman Bonnie will tell you how your dues are divided.

In late Oct. we will be having our first salad luncheon.  We need 2 of you members to co-chair that event.  Please consider doing this for your Auxiliary.

Thank you to all the members who have helped this past month with the many events our Post has been doing. They are trying very hard to erase the debt of the Post home and it is our obligation to help.

Always remember we are an Auxiliary to the Legion.  We are not a separate organization.

For God and Country
President Pat

SUPER SALUTE

Here’s a nice message from Bill Christenson, leader of Leo Carey Post 56 Honor Guard.  “Have you noticed the new Legion emblem in front of the building? Well, it isn’t new, but it looks new.  The Honor Guard had Dan Sorenson finish it.  Next time you see him, compliment him on his work.”

That emblem certainly looks sharp.  And the Super Salute is for Bill Christenson and SAL member Dan Sorenson.
