Commander's Message
Well summer is winding down.
School will soon start with school children walking to school and
school buses on the road. Harvest will be starting the end of
September with farmers being on the road and lines at the elevators.
Summer seems to have gone so fast I hardly even knew it was here.
I would like to thank everyone that
helped at the Grand VanRyswyk benefit. Especially Gary Anderson
who really organized and got the event off the ground. We served
339 people which netted a $2100 donation to Grant for help in
defraying expenses incurred in traveling back and forth from home to
the hospital in Washington D.C. I spoke with Grant and his
parents, they really appreciated what the Post did. Grant said
he got to visit lots of his friends and had a thoroughly good time.
Grant’s donation was presented at the August Post meeting.
Grant left to return to Washington the next day.
Other news, Chris Hallum, our food and
beverage manger, is no longer with us, so we are looking for a new
good and beverage manager. To help us out Vern Strand has agreed
to be the interim manager. Thanks Vern! I would also like
to thank food and beverage employees, for filling in and helping out
in a tuff situation, Jason and Nancy for taking over the event
scheduling. Bill Neff is retiring from Tuesday night bingo as of
October 1, so we will need someone to take his place. If you
have any ideas or a replacement please let us know. Bernie
Priebe, our adjutant, will be getting a new computer and printer.
Upcoming dates to remember. In
September for the World Trade Center attack on the 11th,
POW/MIA Day on the 16th, and Constitution and Citizenship
Day. October 15 and November 5 are the membership dinner.

God and Country

Two brothers served as commanders of Post 56
and also of the First District. They were J. (John) Leonard
“Red” Whelan and Cornelius “Con” P. Whelan.
J. Leonard was the post’s sixth
commander, serving in 1923-24. He was born Nov. 27, 1896, and died
on June 2, 1977. Red served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
He owned Whelan’s Cigar Store, Thompson Wolf Transfer, was bingo manager
for the local Knights of Columbus Club, and served on the Albert Lea City
Council for seven years. Red was the First District Commander in
1934-35.
His older brother, Cornelius P., was born
March 12, 1894, and died on Nov. 19, 1964. Con, as he was best
known, served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He was a charter
member of Post 56 and has the distinction of being one of the few
commanders to serve two terms, 1933-34 and 1934-35. Con was also the
commander of the First District in 1943-44, and commander of Post 447 of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Still another member of this family, Dennis
Whelan, served as post commander in 1976-77. He says Con and Red
were “distant cousins”. |

Summer has gone so fast and now the Fall schedules will soon be here.
You have all received the Dues ntice for 2006. Please send yur
renewals to Joyce Olson at 1930 Wilby Road. Thank You.
It is very important to renew your membership in the American Legion
Auxiliary. Without each of you we will not be able to keep doing
all of the programs for our Veterans or our local projects.
Our Veterans are living longer and we will be having many more due to
the conflicts still taking place. Please, if you know of someone
who has either dropped her membership or is eligible to join, ask them
to consider helping our Veterans by joining the Auxiliary. You
are all important and very much needed. Thank you.
At he Department Convention in Moorhead, Lori Skallerud was elected
Department President of the Auxiliary. Her theme is:
"let Freedom Ring". The yellow ribbon and Bell will be
the symbol. Wishing good luck to her and all other officers in
the District and Department.
Continue to keep all of the soldiers and their families in your
prayers.
Remember, our meeting is September 7th at 7:00pm. We would love
to see many of you there.
See you at the Club
God Bless,
Bonnie

FYI
The following
contribution came from former post commander Bob Miller who
found it in the Redfield, S.D. Press newspaper. It’s
part of the Pastor’s Column by the Rev. William Osborn of St.
Bernards’s Catholic Church of Redfield and published in the
July 6, 2005, issue. Here, with reprint permission, is
this patriotic theme:
FREEDOM ISN’T
FREE: FREEDOM IS 56 BRAVE MEN
“Blessed is
the nation whose God is Lord, the people chosen as his very
own” Psalm 33:12
Have you ever
wondered what happed to some of the 56 men who signed the
Declaration of Independence?
Five signers
were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before
they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
Tow lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;
another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and
died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and
pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four
lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants. Nine
were farmers and large plantation farmers. But they signed
The Declaration of Independence knowing full well that penalty
would be death if they were captured.
Like the people
who signed the declaration, our community is composed of men and
women of ordinary means. Is that all we share in common
with our forefathers or are we prepared to uphold their
patriotic convictions even at the expense of all we held dear?
What the
signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 said, we
ought to voice ourselves in the name of Patriotism: “For
the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the
protection of the Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each
other, our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”
July is truly the month to honor our heritage.
