Commander's Message

Hi Everybody:

What a busy place at the American Legion Post 56. It is hard to find an open date to have anything anymore. What a nice problem to have. I tell you it really makes the time fly by. Thanks to all of you who are supporting the Club. It is nice to see it busy and people having lots of fun.

Farmer’s Market was very successful on Sept. 3rd. Thanks to the entire volunteer’s that helped that evening serving and preparing the food. It must mean that you had a good night when you run out of everything. Also, a big thank you to all who came and supported us by having supper there that evening.  We have been invited to come back and do it again. Of course, Todd Utpadel did an excellent job with his singing and playing.

Don’t forget to bring your Membership Dinner Letter in and get your $6.00 off on your favorite food. We are hearing good things about this way of doing the membership meal instead of the once a year membership dinner. Every member should get their dinner this way.

People that already have tickets to the Gophers vs. Northwestern game on Nov. 1st can ride up to that game on the bus for only $20.00 per person instead of $45.00 and still get the breakfast, transportation and 10% off a meal at the Legion when we return. The only catch is that you have to sign up by Oct. 10th . If we don’t get the bus full by then we will have to cancel this. It will still be $45.00 for the package if you don’t have tickets. You can also get a soda and hot dog for an extra $3.00. Remember this is American Legion Day with the Gophers!

I want to thank everyone who helped at the Post Breakfast on the 4th Sunday which was September 28. It is always more fun when there are more volunteer’s that help.

I don’t know how many know of our recycle program that we have at the club. Lowell Peterson started taking out the cardboard about three years ago and now Terry Vandersnick has taken over for him. I started recycling glass and plastic about a year ago. You can’t believe the money we have saved the club over the years in dumpster bills. Now David Olson has donated a trailer so we can use it as a recycling trailer. Steve Hoelscher and I will be retrofitting it a little so all the cardboard doesn’t fly out traveling down the road. Please thank these people the next time you see them as it is another way in reducing our club cost. If anyone would like to be part of this please let me know. Thank all of you again.

The board decided to reduce the daily drawing to $300.00 instead of $500.00. It will be retroactive back to September 1st. If no one wins the first $300.00 drawing there will be a drawing for the second amount. If someone wins the first there will not be a drawing for the second amount and that will continue to build to $300.00 again. Remember only 80% will be paid out.

There will be raffle tickets sold for 1-42” TV, 3-$250.00 gas cards and 5-$100 gas cards that will be given away on Super Bowl Sunday. Watch for ticket sales to come soon!

Don’t forget Veteran’s Day November 11th! The VFW is handling all the details for this event this year so keep watching for the schedule of events. Sounds to me like they are well under way getting this lined up. Don’t forget to thank VFW Commander Jim Doty and all the VFW Veteran’s for doing this when you see one of them! Thanks VFW and welcome to the team!

We are planning on having something on Pearl Harbor Day which is on December 7th. If you are or know a Pearl Harbor Veteran please let us know. We want to get in contact with you!

Remember W.O.D. (Wipe Out the Debt.) Only $51.26 or more per member! – Let’s burn that mortgage!

Again, thanks to the entire volunteer’s and supporters of the Post 56. We can’t do it with out you!

For God and Country

Dave Mullenbach, Commander

Club Update

Can You Feel It!

There’s a change in the air, fall is coming and with that lots of excitement at the Legion. The staff has been working very hard, and we have listened to your suggestions. We have added some staff to better serve you. They will be easy to identify as they will be wearing red shirts. The new TV’s are awesome. So, stop in and watch your favorite team.  We have also move Texas Hold’em from Saturday to Sunday. This is by the request of the players. On Saturday, the 4th of October we will be having our first jam session. It will be open to all musicians, so if you like to play, sing, or just listen, come on in. October, will be a busy month for me, as I will be playing the part of George Jones in the play “Stand By Your Man” so if you are planning on attending the play, stop at the legion first, show your play ticket and get 10% off of your meal before you attend the show, or stop over afterword and have a drink. We are planning a Halloween Party, so get you costumes ready, as their will be prizes for the best costumes.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

W. O. D. – Sunday, October 19th – 11:00 to 1:30 P.M.

American Legions across the country are closing their doors primarily because of:  1) a loss of members due to death, 2) members not supporting club events which pay the bills as dues just do not cut it, or 3) lack of gaming proceeds to donate to community organizations and help pay authorized bills.  The Leo Carey Post 56 does not want to fall into any of those categories so can you help? I as your current Commander Dave Mullenbach, 1st Vice Rex Stotts and 2nd Vice Bill Goette as your future Commanders pledge to work toward eliminating Post 56’s mortgage debt so we can start giving back financially to the community that strongly supports veterans.  Currently our Post Auxiliary has been donating graciously to several organizations.  We feel that we cannot depend on gaming to help in that area but if we eliminate our debt that payment could be used to support various projects of the American Legion and community organizations.  A very distinctive and visible part of Post 56 is our Honor Guard, but sad to say when they are seen it usually is a time of another lost veteran, but they are a remembrance for that family and friends that saw them.  Post 56 is proud of our Honor Guard and we know the public is very thankful and respectful of them so can you help them to make sure they can remain at their home at the American Legion building located at 142 N. Broadway?  To begin with, Post 56 is hosting a Sunday dinner on October 19, 2008 serving from 11:00am to 1:30pm.  This will be a nice sit down meal with choice of chicken, beef, or pork, with mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, lettuce salad, dessert, and beverage.  The cost will be only $15 per person or $25 for two people (just bring a friend).  What else can you do?  On that Sunday if you donate $51.26 or more per person your name will be put into a drawing for a chance to win one of five prizes which are:  1. $200 Gas card;  2. $100 Grocery card;  3.  Two tickets to ACT season; 4.  $50 Gas card;  5.  $50 Grocery card.  Your entire donation will go toward the debt and you may be able to receive and tax deduction benefit. Please consider joining us and help us eliminate the $67,000 mortgage debt in the next three years or less.  We thank you in advance for your support.  You may buy tickets at the club, from members or just call 373-7993.

F.Y.I.

Here’s an update from Donald R. Jacobson of Hayward, Wisconsin:

43 year member of American Legion Post 56.
54 year former Albert Lea resident, now residing in Hayward, Wis.  Notified by Minneapolis VA Medical Center that I have won a Gold Medal for my entry in the VA National Veterans Arts Competition.  Have earned a trip to Riverside, California, to perform there at the National Festival in October.  There were 3000 entries nationwide - 120 have been invited to attend the Festival, of which 25 were selected to perform.

Cut two CD’s this past year - one entitled “88 years - 88 keys”.  Am told I am the oldest entry in the Competition at 89.  Am grateful to Legion Post 56 for sponsoring my successful claim for service-connected disability.

Contributed World War I Field Drum to Post 56 some years ago.  This drum has the name “Tom Carey” written on the drum skin.  It was brought into my music store in Albert Lea for repairs and never called for.  I would be interested in knowing relationship of Tom to Leo.

I still tune pianos and provide piano entertainment and lectures.  I tune the Minneapolis VA pianos and play regularly for the Veterans from all wars enrolled in the Day Care Center at the VA.  I note your motto “Stay Active” on your Legion monthly news bulletin - I’ve made that my motto too.

Congratulations to the super active Post 56.  Your enthusiasm and reputation are examples for all Posts to follow.

Auxiliary News

Happy October,

This month will find many events to be a part of.  On Oct. 4th come and enjoy live music.  This will be a “jam” session in the bar.  Enjoy music and dinner.

The Post is working very to reduce their mortgage debt.  This will enable this great organization to again contribute to the many community and veterans programs as they have in the past.

The first fund raising event will be a Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 19th.  This will require many hands to help, please say yes if asked.  Most important is to plan on attending.  Bring your friends.  You will be hearing about this in Commander Dave’s letter.

On Oct. 23-25 is Fall Conference.  This is a workshop for Auxiliary and Post and open to any member.  It will be held in Mankato.  If you are interested please see me.

On Oct. 29th the Auxiliary will again host a salad luncheon.  This is one of our main fund raisers.  We are in need of 2 members to co-chair this event.  Please feel free to volunteer!!  If this flyer does not reach you before our Oct. 1st meeting call if you  can help with this important event.

Happy Fall & Halloween

For God and Country
President Pat

Leo Carey Post 56 of the American Legion in Albert Lea

Well this does include men and women from Freeborn County - not just Albert Lea.  So the history is of the members our our Post.  Now as far as taking into account our membership, it should be noted that all of those members had a reason for joining Leo Carey Post 56.  Of our members, some are members of Freemond Mattson 447 of the VFW, some are members of the Disabled American Veterans, some joined to be Sons of the American Legion.  This also includes our Auxiliary and all of the guest members that come thru our doors.  They have a reason for their presence at this Post.  The work and the time that is set aside each day by those members is part of what is our history.  All of this is part of why so many have devoted so much to our Post’s past and future in Albert Lea.

This Post is rich with it’s past.  And our community is strong for the members who, for whatever reason, choose to be involved in Leo Carey Post 56’s history.  We chose to serve our country and to go where we were needed.  We choose to help and to work for all that appreciated our service.  As a Post, we are founded on the history of our members’ and
families’ military service to this country.

History, take a look at the men and women of our Post and their reasons for doing what they did and why they are doing what they do now.
