November 2011

Commander's Message

Commander Mick Jaquette

Dear Legionnaires,

It has been a busy October at Post 56. Club manager, D. J. Dave, has been working so hard, that made himself sick, and spent a week in the hospital. We are all happy he is back and doing very well. We were still able to pull off a big wedding reception and a couple of double bookings, plus Viking football on Sundays. Thank you to our volunteers.

Speaking of volunteers, I want to introduce Franne Camerer, as our volunteer coordinator. Franne has come forward and said she would like to help with organizing our volunteers. We have need for volunteers for Wednesday night bar bingo, moonlight bingo (once a month), meat raffles (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), Vikings football, special events and other activities like recycling or maintenance.  Please fill out the Volunteer Helper form and return it to the Club.

I am sad to report our Gaming Manager, Kyle Olson and Selma Engebretson are retiring at the end of October, however, Kyle and Selma will stay on to help Lyle Hinz, our new Gaming Manager, make a smooth transition. Gaming has been a very integral part of Post 56 operations. Thank you to all our gaming patrons for your support. Please welcome Lyle, and congratulate him for stepping forward, and accepting this important position.

November will be another busy month for Post 56. We are coordinating the Veterans Day activities this year. This is the 10th anniversary of September 11th, and we have asked law enforcement, fire, EMTs and others to participate in the parade and program at the court house, with our VFW and Legion Honor Guards. The Honor Guards and Auxiliary will be doing school programs in the morning. The Honor Guards and marchers will form up at 10:30 at the Legion for our march to the Veterans Memorial.  Coffee and donuts will be available from 8:00 - 10:00, with a hot dish lunch being served at noon at the club. (Goodwill Donation) Please come and participate.

The Honor Guard is the pride of Post 56. There is much behind the scenes work needed to maintain our Honor Guard efficiency. I want to recognize and thank Dave Skogheim and Dennis Smith for cleaning and maintenance of our weapons.

Times are still very difficult at Post 56. I thank everyone for their contribution to my Commander’s Project. We stand at 85% of our goal of $10,000. We still need people to step up and help with our debt reduction, especially our Alliant Energy note payment of $193.39. This is a monthly obligation we can not miss.

Thank you for your support.

Commander Mick

All paid up members for Legion, Auxiliary, and SAL can eat free and if you wish can pay your dues that night. The cost for all other guests or friends is $7.00. SILENT AUCTION

Congratulations to Robert Shideler for having the highest bid on the painted American Eagle. If you didn't get a chance to bid you can have another chance on an item which is the Soldier boot, rifle, and helmet wood carving which you may wish to get before the holiday season. Bidding may be done at the bar and in $5 increments starting Nov. 1 and ending at High Noon on Saturday Dec. 3rd. 2011.

Thank You.

TOM and JERRY SEASON

It is that time of the year again to be Thankful. Why should we wait until that one day in November though to be thankful as we should be that way every day we are able to get up and take nourishment. Tom and Jerrys can be your nourishment and will be served at the club on Thursday November 24, 2011 from 9:00am until 11:30am. Come join us and have some fellowship and possibly win a meat pack for lunch.

God Bless and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Youth Activity Fundraiser for Local Churches

Thanks to everyone who attended the American Legion Post 56 Breakfast this year. FYI, Post 56 has sent out $1674.00 for the first three quarters of this year to the local participating Freeborn County Churches. What a great fundraiser for the Youth Activities Groups in our local community churches.  This program has been very successful and Post 56 is proud to be a part of it. We hope that you continue coming to our Post Breakfasts every 4th Sunday of the month to support this project.
