Message

Hi everybody:
Another busy month has gone by! We made it through the summer holding our own,
thanks to all the volunteers and club supporters. If you haven’t noticed how
cool it has been lately, I think winter is on its way. I really think that
our big months are ahead of us, so keep supporting the club and tell your
friends about it.
We had a successful WOD Fund Raising Dinner. We served 114 dinners and had a lot
of people contribute $51.26 toward the debt. If you weren’t able to come
Sunday for the dinner you can still send the club $51.26 or more. I want to
thank all the volunteers that worked that day. Even some of the kitchen staff
volunteered their time so we really had some good help. The way Todd got to this
amount was divide the number of members into our debt, so if you do the math you
can see that there are a lot of members that haven’t given yet. The amount of
the debt was taken down to $61,XXX.XX and we are still getting checks. We will
still be displaying the tent cards at the club for awhile for you to check it
out. One club member suggested that the first check of the social security raise
should be donated to the club debt as the ones getting it should not miss the
first check because they weren’t getting it anyway. What do you think about
that? Help if you can, we do appreciate it.
The bus will be going to the Gopher vs. Northwestern game November 1, 2008. We will
be serving breakfast at the legion to those going and after that the bus will be
leaving so we can get to the dome before kickoff at 11:00 am. I still have a few
seats left on the bus but if anyone can still go I am not sure where your seats
will be.
You can donate to the Pheasant Dinners for Hospitalized Veterans any time at the
club. The price is the same as last year at $7.00 per bird. Watch for a poster
and tent cards.
St. Theodore’s is having a Mass for all Veterans on Veterans Day at 5:30 pm
Tuesday, November 11th. All Veterans are invited and should wear their uniform (that
is it still fits). Again, thank VFW Commander Jim Doty and his crew for getting
all the events lined up for Veterans Day when you see one of them. It sounds
like they have everything under control.
Let’s show our support to the Auxiliary so mark you calendars for the
Auxiliary Pot-luck super on Dec. 3rd at 6 PM. All members are invited and I know
for sure you will not go away hungry. The High School Holiday Singers will be
performing.
There will be a Halloween Party on October 31st with prizes for the best costumes,
so hope to see you there.
Some of us don’t even have to dress up. Also we are hoping to have a Kids
Christmas program this year on November 30th so watch for details on that. There’s
rumor’s that Santa may show up!
We also hope to have a special program on December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day so watch
for this in next month flyer.
Thank you to 1st Vice Rex Stotts and 2nd Vice Bill Goette for handling our Post
Breakfast on the 4th Sunday. Also thank you both and Les Shaunce for attending
the Fall Conference. I and Arnie went to Kansas City to see Marion Ross perform
in her new play that weekend so we were not able to be there.
Keep watch for the Welcome Home Event for the troops that returned from Kosovo
last July. We are still planning that event and have not come up with a date
that will work yet.
I can never thank all the volunteer’s enough that help keep things going. So
thank you again!
For God
and Country

Update
Hello everyone;
First, thanks to everyone who attended the play and for all of the nice
comments. It was a great experience. We have got another full month coming
in November. First, remember to set your clocks back an hour on November 2nd.
Then on the 4th get out and vote, it is the only way to make your voice heard
that counts. Also, we will be having a Thanksgiving dinner with all of the
fixings, on Wednesday evening, November 26th. Reservations will be required so
that we can make sure that everyone will have an enjoyable meal.
Once again our backroom is fully booked for the month. With private parties, our
Saturday evenings have been picking up, with our full menu always available. One
customer told me his meal reminded him of the Old Club 16, a lot to eat, it
tasted great and at a fair price. So, whether you want a steak, walleye, or a
hamburger you can enjoy it here.
Start making plans for New Years Eve. We will be taking reservations for dinner.
(Members will have first priority, after Thanksgiving we will open up the
reservations to everyone.) There will be two seating’s, the first will be at
5:30 and the second will be at 7:30. There will be dance music in the back
starting at 8:00, and karaoke in the front. The Menu will be a special one for
that evening and will include, NY Strip, Walleye, Prime Rib, Rib Eye, Shrimp,
Salmon, you will also get a salad bar and complementary champagne, the price
will be $16.50 per person, with available seating of 125 guests per seating. At,
Midnight there will be a balloon drop, party favors and Champagne for all.
Stop in and Say HI!

F.Y.I.
On October 19, 2008, the Tribune published an article about the city’s largest
and most overlooked recreational asset - Bancroft Bay City Park. And as
I emphasized in this article the original name for this part of the
landscape was Coney Island. Thankfully, the Bancroft Bay designation makes
more sense.
All this reminds me of the FYI commentaries I wrote for last year’s October,
November, and December issues. At that time I was proposing that a small
park up in the Shoreland Heights neighborhood have a name change to honor the
memory of a U.S. Marine who died during Word War II.
Again, here are the facts. A neighborhood memorial was dedicated on May
23, 1943, to honor Marine Corps 1st Lt. John Anthony Weber. He was killed
in action when his aircraft was shot down on April 7, 1943, near Guadalcanal
Island. The bronze plaque on a stone and a flagpole which serve as the
centerpieces for the small circular park at the east end of Lee Place had been
provided by the area’s residents to honor the deceased Marine who grew up in a
nearby home.
Okay, what has happened regarding this proposal to change the name of this small
park from Lee or Lee Place to Weber during the past year? The obvious
answer is nothing!
If the city park board or city council can change the name of a northside
park from Lincoln to the more sensible New Denmark, then they can also make the
logical decision to rename this place Weber Park. After all, all it takes
is a sign.

News
Thanksgiving Greetings,
The holiday season is fast approaching. Please remember those in our
community who need assistance. There are the community food shelves and
soon you will find the Sharing trees in the mall and many churches. Please
consider doing at least one of these projects.
Our District President has a special project this year. She is asking for
12 1/2 in. quilt squares. These are to be unfinished and in any
combination or red, white and blue. These will be put into Quilts of
Valor. These quilts are given to injured service men and women on arrival
at Military hospitals.
If you can make one or many just call me at 373-1761 and I will pick them up or
drop them off at the Legion Club.
Please put December 3rd on your calendar. That is the night the High School
Musical Group will be coming to sing their beautiful Christmas music. The
evening will begin with a pot-luck supper at 6 pm. All members and guests
are welcome.
For God and Country
President Pat

Membership
Fellow Members;
A question was recently asked as to why our dues renew in July rather than the
end of the year. The fiscal year for our Post runs from July 1st thru June 30th,
so are dues are on the same schedule. I also, did some research and came
up with the following;
The 1919 National Bylaws, Article X, Section 4, sets the due date of October
20th of each year for the year about to begin. All memberships expire December
31st unless renewed for the following year. National membership office will
often reactivate memberships after January 1st in order to renew when the
transmittals are received, but members face several dangers if the wait until
January 1st or later.
1. They are not eligible for disaster relief.
2. They may lose an issue or
more of the magazine.
3. They may lose their continuous years
4. They are not eligible to enter
other American Legion Posts
5. They may lose insurance protection under most of the Legion’s insurance
programs.
The fact remains that memberships expire on December 31st. We will reinstate
members after that date as a favor to them, but they are in fact expired.
Members should not assume that National will always reinstate them with their
continuous tears of service, since that is done as a courtesy at this point.
Sincerely
Rex Stotts, 1st Vice
