American Legion Post 56 Monthly Bulletin

May 2011

Commander's Message

Spring started, but seems to have had a hiccup.  This is not unlike the club as we have a good week for business, then the next week it changes.  Hopefully, spring will brighten things up with new crops and plants as they flourish; that is what we hope will happen here at Post 56.  So, please be positive.

First, let me congratulate Ruth Perry for being selected as the Legionnaire of the Year.  That same evening, we recognized several members that have had fifty years membership with the American legion.  I also thank the very, nice crowd that attended this program.

In addition to checking the calendar in the flyer, you can also check the website for Post 56 information.  The website not only has the information found in the flyer, but you will find many photos, event information and links to Department and National.  Check it out; you may find yourself on it!

Post 56 is in need of new officers for the year 2011-2012.  Currently, we have a Commander, but are still looking for a 1st vice and 2nd vice.  If you are interested in serving in one of these positions, please let me, or the Adjutant know.

First District Convention will be held in Adams, MN on May 21st and 22nd.  If interested in attending, please call or leave your name at the Post.  Along the same line, Department will be holding their convention in July.  Another item of new business is that the national Convention will be held in Minneapolis in August. Minnesota wants to have a large delegation of flags marching, so keep that in mind for August.

Local events coming up include the Memorial Day Program, so look for that agenda of events.  The local Guard Unit will be marching in the parade this year, so please help show your support.  Another event coming up is the National Red Power Round-Up in June, the 23rd-25th, at the fairgrounds.  Post 56 is having a food stand at the fair and will need helpers, so please check out the volunteer list at the club. Starting Wednesday, May 18th, the Farmer’s Market will be serving food between 4:00 and 6:00 pm.  As you can see, there are several opportunities to help.

May 7th at 7:00 pm there will be a dance at the Armory to help support the “Beyond The Yellow Ribbon Community’ Program”  The cost is $10.00 and The Allie Katz will be playing, so please come and support our local Guard Unit.

Auxiliary News

Our annual reports were due April 15th.  We thank you for giving us coupons and pop tabs.  Here are the totals we received:  235 box tops; 570 Campbell Soup labels; 165 Kemps, nickel, bottle caps; and 14 pounds of pop tabs which were given to the Ronald McDonald House.  Keep saving all of these.  Even if it’s a small amount, it all adds up.  The District Convention will be held, May 21st and 22nd in Adams.  Some of us will be going and if anyone wants a ride, call me at:  377 – 2714.

Legion Youth Donations

This is an update on how our 4th Sunday Monthly Post Breakfast's and Youth Activity Program with local churches is going. For the first quarter we have sent checks out to 15 local Churches who elected to participate in the Youth Activity Fundraiser Program for the amount of $819.00. For those that are not aware of the program, the Am. Legion donates $1.00 back to the church of your chose for their Youth Activity Programs. This includes money collected for three Legion Breakfast's and one VFW Breakfast so far this year. We think that this program is working well and want to thank all the people for their continued support.
