Commander's Message

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations to “Our Legionnaire of the Year” – Arnie Mulso. David Olson did a wonderful job describing Arnie’s involvement and all he does for the Am. Legion by the bio he read at the Awards Banquet. Keep up the good work Arnie and thanks again.

Also we recognized Carroll J. Aasen, Jerry P. Blakeslee, Wayne V. Broecker, Roger E. Erickson, Patrick Fitzgerald, Gordon D. Miller and Lewis Weseman for 50 year membership. Fred L. Schaub was the only 60 year membership awarded. We would like to thank all the past Legionnaire’s of the Year and all the members over 50 year membership who attended the banquet. It was nice to see you all there. It was nice to do this on Sunday afternoon under a more relaxed condition not to have a post meeting afterwards. I appreciate all the good sports in having some fun with the Court Marshall that evening.

The Commanders project is all completed except paying for it. The 3 TV’s and the cooler floor have been installed. I will be hanging pictures of the cooler floor up but if you would like to see it ask someone at the club to take you down there the next time you are at the club. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with this project! You can still donate to this project if you haven’t already until May 15th as I will be wrapping it up then. Thanks again to all who have donated to this date.

We will be hosting the Farmers Market on May 13th, June 10th, July 15th, Aug. 26th, Sept. 9th and Oct. 7th with food and maybe entertainment. Please write these dates in your calendar and we will need volunteers to help. Please sign up and if you can not help please support by coming to eat on the above dates.

The 1st District Convention will be held in La Crescent, MN on May 16th and 17th. If you would like to attend please let me know and I will make arrangements.

Past Commanders dinner and meeting went very well. I announced a vision for the future of the Am. Legion Club. It is a three phase project called “American Legion Expansion Project”. Phase I would be to purchase the alley south of the Legion to build a dry storage area as we need more storage to make more room for seating in the banquet hall. We would also put a patio in the front third of the alley. Phase II would consist of building the patio, dry storage and tear down the old boiler chimney which will need to come down some day anyway as the brick mortar is deteriorating . Phase III would consist of putting a glass patio on the east end of the legion for fine dining and over looking the lake. This will not be done all at once. The work will be done in phases only if there is enough money in the account. This will be funded by people that wish to leave money to the American Legion and so they know where the money will go. There is an account set up at the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce for this project. If you have questions please call me anytime on my cell 507-383-5866 or my home 507-373-5093.

There will be several WWII Veterans from Albert Lea leaving on the Honor Flight for Washington on May 2nd to tour the WWII Memorial. Please wish them well on their trip and that they return home safely. You can support this project by giving $5.00 or more and get a pink tent card put above the bar. Veterans have fun and enjoy your trip; you deserve it and have earned it!

The VFW will be lining up events for Memorial Day which is on May 25 this year.  Thanks VFW members!

Thanks to all that attended the American Legion Baseball Fundraiser Breakfast on April 19th. We still have to raise more money for that project so watch for another fundraiser later. We will be getting their schedule posted as soon as available. Please attend their games and support them.

For God and Country
Commander Dave Mullenbach

F.Y.I.

On Saturday, May 2, a group of veterans from both Albert Lea and Glenville will be going to Washington, D.C., on a one day trip to visit the nation’s World War II Memorial.  This trip from the Rochester Airport is being sponsored by the Southeast Minnesota Honor Flight.

For those Freeborn County World War II veterans the entire trip is at no cost.  It’s our opportunity to visit the place which since May 2004 has been called the “Jewel of the Mall”.  Our nation’s salute to those who served during this war is located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

In the next newsletter or flyer we’ll have more information about this trip.

I was in Rochester on April 19 to participate in the orientation meeting for those going to visit this memorial and several other places in Washington, D.C., on May 2.

That’s right, I’ll be a participant in this trip, not as a member of the media, but as a veteran of World War II (plus Korea).  However, I’ll try to get to the Oregon part of the memorial because that was my home state and where I was drafted into the U.S. Army during 1945.

Hopefully there will be more information about this trip in the Tribune after we get back.  Also, I plan to do several Friday columns based on our visit to a very special place in our nation’s capital.

Legionnaire of the Year

Thank you and what an honor to be recognized by my peers and have my name placed on the wall with past Legionnaires of the Year.  I believe I have only helped Post 56 and its club to be what every other member would want it to be and that is for it to be an icon in the community for how the Legion can help the community and the community in turn will help the Legion.  It is great to have a club with our Post for members and friends to socialize but many times it takes volunteers to help with special events or fund raisers which is where one can also make new friends and learn to work together to make the Legion stronger.  Through these efforts of positive thinking and working together Post 56 can grow and improve the image of the American Legion in the community and help build better citizens of the United States of America.  I also would like to thank the selection committee, special surprise guests and all that attended the awards evening banquet that helped make it very special to me.

Arnie Mulso, Legionnaire of the Year - 2009

Attention Korean War Era Veterans

The Korean War veterans will be recognized every July 27 with the establishment of Korean War Armistice Day.  As part of the local recognition program leading up to July 27, area veterans are organizing a display from Freeborn County Korean War era veterans who were assigned to military units throughout the world in any branch of service in support of operations between 1950 and 1960.  If you would like to share your experiences, pictures, slides, posters or memorabilia, please contact the American Legion Post 56 at 507-373-7993 and a veteran member will get back to you with further information on displays.

You may also contact our coordinator Dave Olson at 507-373-0791.  Your experiences and display items would be appreciated by July 7, 2009.

Auxiliary News

It is already May and we will soon be ending the 2008-09 year for the Auxiliary.  A special Thank You to Janet for serving as chairman for the Spring salad luncheon.  Thank You to all who donated either salads or time.  These events put monies in our Treasury and we in turn can give it away.

At the May awards night we will be announcing two scholarship winners and the Citizenship winners for the 2009 class.

We will soon be selecting 2 Junior girls as this years Girl Staters.  The cost for this is about $600.00.

Our June meeting will be a pot-luck supper followed by a ceremony honoring our long time members.

The District convention will be held May 16-17 in La Crescent.  This is open to any member.  If you would like to go just get in touch with me.

As I close, a Special Congrats to Legionnaire of the Year, Arnie Mulso.
