Commander's Message
May
is here with a busy agenda but what a beautiful spring which brings
new life. Just a reminder
that May 8th is Mother’s Day – thanks for Mothers and
what they do and stand for. May
21st is Armed Forces Day so fly your flag high and thank a
veteran. Also remember our
troops currently serving and thank them.
Another day is May 30th – Memorial Day which
always gives us inspiration for our freedoms that have been won and
paid for by our veterans. The
VFW will be in charge of the program this year so if in town show your
support by attending the services.
In April the Commanders hosted a great spaghetti dinner but
could have used a few more eaters.
Thanks for attending. Also,
1st District Commander Dan Standinger presented the 50 (15)
and 60 (12) years members their certificate of appreciation at our
Post meeting so thank you for your service.
That same night the Legionnaire of the Year was announced by
Dept. Vice Commander Kenny Nelson and this year’s award went to
Robert K. Miller so congratulations for your services rendered for
Post 56 (photos on website).
What’s
coming up with Commander’s project?
Everything is ordered and the flooring should be completed on
May 22nd and 23rd except for the molding.
Thank you everyone that helped to make this project a reality.
In early June (probably a Sat.) we will have an open house with
treats to show it off. You
may also check out the lounge by stopping in to have a bite to eat or
play bingo or just visit. Interesting
visitors from
New Zealand
stopped in the other night for a great night of sharing and got to
meet the great Albert Lea
and Post 56 hospitality. Never
know where your guests will come from.
Now, just when things seem to be running a little smoother the
sky drops. We have been
informed (April 8th) that our ice machine is on its final
leg so okay, but then our air conditioning unit is basically done.
Committee looking at options, getting quotes, and board will
probably have a decision on something before you receive this flyer so
check the website for updates and bulletin board at club.
Any ideas of financial support or contributions contact the
Commander or Adjutant Bernard.
May
will also offer a chance for you to elect new officers so please
attend the Post meeting on
May 9th so hopefully a great many SAL members will attend
that meeting as well.
For God and Country,
Arnie
Mulso, Commander Post 56

F.Y.I.
Tribune
Staff Writer Ann Austin has again done an excellent job of publicizing
the proposed Freeborn County Veteran’s Memorial to be located near
the corner of
Broadway Avenue
and
College Street.
Her
latest report and update on this particular project was on the front
page of the April 1, 2005 issue of the
Tribune.
According to her article, 362 paver bricks and five sponsor
plaques have been purchased so far.
By now these numbers should be even higher.
To
order a personalized paver brick, send an application (available at
the Legion Club or at the Freeborn County Government Center) along
with a check for $100 made out to the “Chamber Foundation",
annotating "Freeborn County Veteran’s
Memorial” on the memo line and mail to:

LEGION
HERITAGE
Every
part of The American Legion Emblem has a meaning, a rich symbolism
that a glance does not reveal. The
Emblem is laid upon the rays of sun, giver of life, warmth and
courage; foe of the cold,
of the darkness, of fear, of apprehension.
In turn, each of the Emblem’s many parts signifies a meaning
which no American Legionnaire who wears the Emblem should take
lightly, and which he should know from the first moment that he puts
his emblem on. Why does
the star signify constancy of purpose?
Because the stars are fixed in the heavens, while the planets,
the moon and the sun wander. As
the stars do not wander, so should The American Legion not wander from
its fixed purposes.
In
the next Legion Heritage will be an explanation of all the symbols in
our official emblem.
