Commander's Message

Please bear with me as I am the fill in for Commander Gary as he and his wife Sharon are on a well deserved vacation in warmer weather enjoying themselves. He should be back the first week in March.

As you all know we have been very busy trying to find a replacement for Heidi Watson our club manager.  We wish her well at her next job and thank her for all the things she has done for the betterment of Post #56.  She will be missed!  Thank You, Heidi!!

Todd Utpadel started as Club Manager on Feb. 18th.  If you don’t know Todd, stop in and introduce yourself and visit with him.  He would like to meet everyone he doesn’t know!  I am sure he will be busy.

Hope everybody had a wonderful Valentine’s Day. Thanks to all the people that came up for supper and supported the Club.

Please pay close attention to the March Calendar and bulletin board as things have had to be changed.  Also watch the bulletin board as who knows what Todd has in mind for events at the club to fill up days in March with events.  We can still use some people to sell Herbergers Community Days Coupons before March 1st. Post Everlasting will be on March 10th starting at 6pm.  Please be prompt!  This ceremony is held each year to place the names of deceased members to the Adjutant of the Post Everlasting.  Other than spouses of the deceased there will be a $6.00 charge for dinner.  Bernie is working hard on that so everyone gets notified of the event.  March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day so stop in for stew, corn beef and cabbage and a glass of green beer.  Don’t forget the 4th Sunday, March 23rd, is our Post Breakfast.  This has been very good and helps the club financially.  Bring a friend and enjoy a wonderful breakfast.

We still need volunteers to help with Bingo on Wednesday nights.  If you would like to help give Billy Christenson a call or leave your name at the club and someone will get in touch with you.  You will see a change in the Mega Bingo.  Mega Bingo has upgraded to a Progressive Mega Bingo which means it is possible to win now three different ways.  The winnings will be much bigger than before.  Come up and give it a try!  This is exciting, a lot of fun and also is another way to help the Club financially.  See you on Wednesday nights!

I will also take this opportunity to let you know about the membership renewal update.  We are now at 990 which is 93% of the total membership.  Bernie will be sending out postcard reminders to those that haven’t yet renewed their membership.  If you are one that hasn’t, please get it in the mail ASAP.  If we don’t hear from you after the mailing someone will be calling you.  Thanks again, for those that have already been paid up for their 2008-2009 membership.

Next years slate of officers is slowly coming into place.  I will be moving up to the Commanders Office, Rex Stotts will be 1st Vice and Bill Goette has graciously said he would move into 2nd Vice Office.  We will be in need of some Trustees to step into those vacant positions.  As you will know we will have to find a Historian/Editor as well.  Ed Shannon has said that he would like to retire from that job.  Thanks again Ed for everything you have done.  If you would like to serve on the board or as an officer, please submit your name to Adjutant Bernie.

Keep the Military Troops in your prayers!  We are so lucky to have the freedom that we have here!

See you at the Club!

For God and Country
1st Vice Commander Post 56 Dave Mullenbach

Club Update

Todd Utpadel

Hello  Everyone;

My name is Todd Utpadel, I am your new club manager. I am very excited about this opportunity. In March we are going to have a very busy month here. On Saturday nights we are going to feature fine dining, with a special menu each week. At the end of the month we will be having the Jack Schultz Orchestra. St. Patty’s day will be a fun day with an all Irish menu, Karaoke with Laurie and a Danny Boy Contest. And, don’t forget Green Beer.  Please stop in and introduce yourself, I am very excited to meet all of you.

Have A Great Day,
A Special Thanks To All Our Service Men and Women;

Todd Utpadel
Club Manager

The following news report was submitted by Dave Mullenbach:

ALBERT LEA’S FIRST MEGA BINGO WINNER!
As her bingo card filled up on a recent Wednesday night at the American Legion Club Post #56 in Albert Lea, Sandy Mullenbach got excited.
“I could hardly believe it! I was really nervous, I’m down to one number”, she said to herself.

Sandy was playing Mega Bingo Even and Odd Blackout game, linked with other bingo facilities across Minnesota, all playing simultaneously, when the next ball came up - “I knew it was a ‘G’”, she said - and began to hope it might be the number she needed.

“Let it be 56, let it be 56”, she kept repeating to herself.

As her final number was called out, she called out, Arnie...Arnie...Arnie...instead of calling “Bingo”. Arnie who was near by asked if she had a Bingo and she replied yes!  She was so nervous Arnie had to call out “Bingo” for her.

“You just get so flabbergasted”, Sandy said.  “You just don’t ever expect it to happen.”

She won about $140, splitting the nearly $1122 jackpot with eight players across Minnesota.  DSL lines provide the link and at 8:30 pm every Wednesday night the game is  played.

The concept was developed in October and is played four nights a week throughout the state.

Being Albert Lea’s first Mega Bingo winner makes Mullenbach somewhat of a celebrity at the American Legion, according to Arnie Mulso, who oversees play.
Mullenbach isn’t complaining though, that she had to split it eight ways.  She thinks that is good that more people get to benefit from the winnings’.  I will probably use it when we go on our winter vacation.

Auxiliary News

It seems like it didn’t do much good to get through January when February was just as bad, weatherwise, huh?  But be grateful if you haven’t slipped into a ditch, and you have a warm home to sit out the end of the winter.  As veteran Minnesotans, we know spring will come.

Our February 5 meeting had a rather small attendance, what with the weather, and it being Ash Wednesday.  With so many things coming up, and Easter being so early, it was decided to postpone the spring salad luncheon until Wednesday, April 2.  So we will have our March 5 meeting to get organized for it.  I hope you get this before February 27...and don’t make that hotdish yet!!

The Red Cross has asked us to furnish the food for the workers at the Monday, March 10 Bloodmobile, to be held at Crossroads Church.  Happily, we had enough people sign on the donation sheet at the February 5 meeting.  So this is just a reminder to those generous volunteers to get your food to the Legion Club by noon on Monday, March 10, and Pat Johannsen has volunteered to take it all out to Crossroads before 1:00 pm.

Our membership chairman tells me there are a number of women who have not sent in their membership renewal and some of them are long-standing members who probably just forgot.  So please send your $18 to Bonnie Schneider or just drop it off at the club.  They have a “mailbox” for us and we check it frequently.

We were happy to install some new members in our Legion Auxiliary at the February 5 meeting.  We look forward to seeing them at our meetings and other functions.

Due to weather and some other conflicts, none of us went to the District 1 meeting in Mabel January 26.  But we have commission reports to keep us up to speed.  And we do have the annual reports for each committee to prepare.  They have to be in by April 15 so on Monday, April 7 we will meet at 1 pm to prepare the annual reports and get them sent in.  If you are a committee chair, please mark this on your calendar and join us that day to complete this important annual task.

Our next regular meeting will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 5, with the Board meeting at 5:00 on Monday, March 3.
