Commander's Message

Well, is the Spring thaw on its way or is this something we get before the storm?  That seems to be the way things are happening here at the club.  Things seem to be going good, great attendance at the Post meeting, bills being paid, great participation at the club in the lounge and dining room, and then our freezer decides to reach the point of no more fixing, and then the popcorn machine decides to burn up.  So what happens?  Thanks to a couple of guys that spear headed a donation to the freezer program - their personal contacts generated enough money (plus) to purchase a new freezer for the kitchen and then along with the Auxiliary donation we were also able to purchase a new refrigerator.  The AMVets and several others donated to the purchase of a new popcorn machine.  So, a very large THANK YOU to all.

If you have been at the club you probably have noticed that it is busier and we thank you.  We need your support to keep the entire operation going.  March presents several fish fries that you can attend plus a comedy show on the 17th and Tom & Max on the 31st plus the karaoke on Friday nights.  Also, an event that can help financially is the Boys State scholarship all you can eat spaghetti dinner on Saturday the 3rd of March.

The Post is selling Herberger’s Community Day coupon books again for $5 for the sale on March 3rd and remember the Post get the $5.  Help us out and buy a book.  Another way to help is by helping work at the Legion breakfast on the 4th Sunday of the month anytime from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm and that is appreciated.  A special breakfast on May 13th will be held to help raise money to sponsor Legion Baseball since we have no extra gaming money we must raise money to support the baseball program so come out and have breakfast.  If you would like to financially support the Legion Baseball program you may send a donation to the Post marked Legion Baseball and that would be greatly appreciated.

On Memorial Day this year there will be a dedication for the veterans memorial at the court house lawn at 2:30 pm so watch for more information.

This next piece of business is of great concern.  Election of officers will be coming up soon, but we have no 1st or 2nd vice commander in office now.  Without officers can a Post operate?  We know with no Commander gaming will no longer be able to operate.  Nominations may have to come from the floor and if you are not present it does not mean you can’t get nominated.  We need to hear from you and if possible attend the March Post meeting on Monday March 19th at 7:00 pm.  This is also Post Everlasting so please attend.

Lastly, my wife Patricia and I would like to thank everyone that sent cards, called, helped, or attended the funeral of my mother-in-law Julie Heyne.  The Legion family does help one get through troubled times and also helps you learn that there is great support when needed.  I am sorry that her easy way of life has not fully rubbed off on me but she never complained and I will miss not being able to pick on her.  Thank you all and God Bless you all.

For God and Country

March Madness is upon us.  Hope everyone survived the terribly cold February we had.

Thank You!  Thank You!  To everyone who donated so generously towards the purchase of the new freezer and refrigerator that we needed so badly.  Your family will forever appreciate all your kindness and support.  A special thanks to Ron and Ray who initiated the fund drive.  We greatly appreciate all your hardwork and effort.

When better weather comes we can again expect to see folks carefully looking over the paver bricks with names in the new Freeborn County Veterans’ Memorial.  And by Memorial Day, according to Irene Anderson of the Freeborn County Veterans’ Service Office, this will be helped with a new directory to help in the search for those special bricks.

At the present time there are 2,017 of those pavers with names, and room for even more.  Jon Rhiger says this number includes the pavers for those county residents who died while serving in the nation’s armed forces.

Now let’s salute a special World War II veteran.  Because Nestor Sybilrud was a member of the Glenville Legion Post, we couldn’t list him in the Taps part of this publication after he died on Feb. 11, 2007.  Yet, he was an important part of so many funerals for area veterans.

A few years ago I wrote an article about Nestor for the Tribune, I called him the “Viking Bugler”.  There were two reasons for this very appropriate title.
First, Nestor was a trumpet player and a member of Skipper Berg’s Viking Accordion Band from 1932 to 1940, and later played with other area orchestras and bands.

Second, he willingly volunteered so many times to be the taps-playing bugler at the funerals for fellow veterans.  He did this through all the years as the Glenville Postmaster and in his years of retirement.

So here’s a special TAPS for Nestor Sybilrud, the Viking Bugler.

Auxiliary News

Ah-h-h-h the ides of March are upon us, but whatever weather March brings up, it can’t be as bad as the cold spell of January and February, right?  I just want to commend all the brave ladies that came out for our February 7 meeting.

Valentines Day in the middle of February was a mood brightener with all the red decor.  I hope each of you got something sweet from the special person in your life.
Our February 28 Salad Luncheon, hosted by Pat Johannsen was a great way to end the month and look forward to Spring.  We thank all who helped and donated.  It is a good fundraiser for the worthy causes we support.

I am writing this in February but you won’t read it until March and by that time I will be back from my California trip.  I am going to San Francisco to attend the OSCAR party my son hosts every year on Academy Award Night.  His theme this year is “Royal”.  The invitation came on a cardboard crown.  Since every guest has to dress as some character from the past year’s movies, I’ll let you guess what character I will be.  (I promise to bring back pictures.)

March also brings daffodils from the American Cancer Society.  Be sure to buy a bunch or two at local supermarkets or banks on March 9 and 10.  I think they are a horticultural miracle, the way they are timed and grown in Washington, shipped here, and when you buy them they look like a bunch of asparagus.  But take them home and put them in a vase of warm water.  The next day you have these beautiful yellow flowers brightening your day.  Plus you have contributed to the research for cancer cures.

So let’s all SPRING ahead to a full and exciting season.  The next Auxiliary meeting is at 7:00 pm March 7.  Be there!  Bring a friend!  The board will meet Monday March 5 at 5:15 pm.  And a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you all!

For God and Country

Veterans Memorial Update

As of February 20th a total of 2,075 of the paver bricks and 41 sponsorships have been sold to honor those who served in the nation’s armed forces.  There’s still room for more paver bricks and more sponsorships!

A check with Jon Rhiger indicates the dedication of the now completed Freeborn County Veterans’ Memorial will be held at a future date to be announced.

Post 447 VFW and Auxiliary meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of every month at the American Legion Post 56 Clubrooms @ 7:00pm. Come and join VFW Post 447.
