Commander's Message

Greetings,

This will be my last letter as your current Commander.  As I reflect back on our past year there have been many challenges and highlights.  As with any organization we have been faced with the changing economic times and have had to adjust our operation to adapt to these changes.  As our Board of Officers have studied these situations we hope that we have made adjustments to better our Post and make it a more flexible and advanced business in order to continue to serve the veterans of our area and country.

As we look ahead we need to continue to be vigilant of changing patterns in our society and be prepared to change our practices to take advantage of the opportunities that exist to further our cause.

There have been many advances made this past year, we have amended and brought up to date our by-laws, we have improved our lighting system to hopefully reflect a savings in the future, we have tried to keep up with improvements and will be installing new carpet in both the lounge area and dining room.  As in the past our members have supported the Post and stepped up with both financial contributions and volunteer help.  We are constantly monitoring our labor costs and trying to streamline our club operation in order to improve our financial condition.

Although I wanted to focus more on advancing the programs of the Legion, conditions dictated that we spend the majority of our time monitoring and adjusting our business practices to meet the needs of our financial situation.

I would like to thank the Board of Officers, Auxiliary, Honor Guard, employees, members and all the volunteers for their support of Post 56.  Without the continued efforts of these people we would not be able to survive.

Thanks to my wife for the encouragement she gave me the past year and making sure I made it to all my commitments on time.

In the past year we have tried to bring our message to the community by having our Honor Guard available to represent the military at funerals as requested by families.  We also have been available to present our program to school classes and interact with nursing home veterans.  These are programs that we need to continue in the future.  We have also presented our veterans display to our members and the public to try and help people better understand what the Legion is about.

A big THANK YOU to Bill Goette for all his help last year and congratulations on being elected our new Commander for the coming year.  Let’s all get behind Bill and make sure he has a successful year.

I would like to invite you to my final fund raiser for the Legion. We, will be having a Meatball dinner on Saturday the 5th of June starting at 5:00 and going until 7:00. In the last month we had 3 pieces of equipment fail. A bar dishwasher, the garbage disposal, and a bar cooler. So, please help us if you can and enjoy a great meal in the process. It will be served family style.

Again I would like to thank everyone for their support and I continue to look forward to supporting and contributing to the advancement of the American Legion.

For God and Country
Rex F. Stotts
Commander

Attention Korean War Era Veterans

The Korean War veterans will be recognized every July 27 with the establishment of Korean War Armistice Day.

As part of the local recognition program leading up to July 27, area veterans are organizing a display from Freeborn County Korean War era veterans who were assigned to military units throughout the world in any branch of service in support of operations between 1950 and 1960.  If you would like to share your experiences, pictures, slides, posters or memorabilia, please contact the American Legion Post 56 at 507-373-7993 and a veteran member will get back to you with further information on displays.  You may also contact our coordinator Dave Olson at 507-373-0791.  Your experiences and display items would be appreciated by

Welcome to summer. It is great to see all the flowers blooming. Speaking of flowers we will be offering Poppies on May 28-29 at our local stores. Please wear a Poppy in honor of our veterans. Our last meeting of the year will be on June 7th. This will be a pot-luck supper at 6 p.m.  We will be honoring our long time members that night. Please join us. You are welcome to bring a guest.

On June 11th we will be installing our new officers. This will begin with dinner at 6 p.m. Congratulations to Rex on a job well done. His project of new carpet will soon give the Legion a new look.

As I finish this year thank you to all my officers and chairman for their support to this great organization.
