Commander's Message

Hi Everyone,

What a busy year and how fast it went! This is my last Commander’s newsletter so I want to thank everyone, and I mean everyone for all the help and support you have given me financially and morally as Commander this past year! I can’t say enough good thinks about this Club and its members. I know that the next two Commander’s will keep this place just as busy, so please support them as much everybody has supported me. I want to thank Todd Utpadel and his staff for the excellent job they have done. Todd has really kept this place busy. Billy Christenson needs a round of applause for the job he has done with the Honor Guard, Bingo and the many other little things he does that we sometimes take for granted. I want to thank Adjutant Bernie for all his help during his trying time with him and his wife’s health.  Thank you Arnie Mulso for filling in for Bernie when needed! I want to thank Kyle and Selma and their staff that put so many hours in the Gaming side of the Club. I was blessed with just a wonderful Chain of Command, from my House Committee to the Members that served on the Board of Directors. Also, Auxiliary President Pat Johannsen did a wonderful job this year and I thank her for another term as President next year. Last, but not least, I want to thank all the volunteers who help with all the projects, cleaning, maintenance and any other job that need done without being asked to help. What a wonderful year! I will not forget anyone by saying; “THANKS EVERYONE!”

Memorial Day will be gone and over when you read this Flyer. Thank you Commander Jim Doty and all the VFW members for being great partner’s to work with this past year. What a great job with the events you organized. Thanks for all the work you folks have done!

Thanks for supporting the Post Breakfast on May 24th. Also, support the DayBreakers Fundraiser Breakfast for all the Youth Mission Projects that kids will be going to through their local churches.

2nd Vice Bill Goette has lined up a Flag Burning Ceremony in conjunction with Good Samaritan on June 14th. Good Sam is having a four hour entertainment session from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The Flag Burning Ceremony will be held at 1:00 pm to 1:20 pm. Everyone is welcome!

Friday June 19th will be installation of Officers. Next years officers will be: Commander – Rex Stotts, 1st Vice – Bill Goette and we are still looking for a 2nd Vice. If you or you know of anyone that would like to assume that responsibility please let us know.

We will be having a hamburger fry on Friday, June 26th 4:30 -6:30 for a fundraiser to help with the cost of sending our WWII Veterans to Washington, D. C. to see the National Memorial. Congratulations, you deserver it!

We will be having Matt Dorman and Aaron Thomas attending Boys State this year. I know they will enjoy it!

We will be at the Farmers Market with food on June 10, July 15, August 26, September 9, and October 7th.   Also, we will have a booth at the Fair this year on August 4th – 9th. Watch for sign up sheets to help at these events. If you can’t help with these events please support them when you can.

Post Golf Tourney is August 1st, so mark that on your calendar. Everyone is welcome!

Please watch the bulletin board for other dates that I did not mention do to the lack of space.

Again, I want to thank everyone for a wonderful year and will see you at the club next year in a more relaxed condition.

For God and Country
Commander Dave Mullenbach

Club Update

Summer is here;

And, with it all kinds of opportunities for the American Legion. We will be very involved in the community. We are at Farmers Market once a month, we will be at the Freeborn County Fair with a food booth. The buffet every Thursday night is a huge success, so stop in there are over 15 items on the buffet every week. In June we are having a few special evenings. June 6th we are having a Buffet, and “Old Time Polka Fest” with H and R Entertainment, the buffet will run from 4:00 – 8:00 and the Polka Music will start at 6:30 until 10:30. On June 11th in honor of Flag Day we will be having the Albert Lea Community Band. June is also, the Corey Goodnature Golf Outing, stop in and throw your spare change into the Jug and help support his great cause.  On Friday the 26th of June we are having a good old Country Hoe Down with the Cabin Fever Band the night before the golf tournament. So, come on up and help us raise some money. So, as you can see we are alive and well at the American Legion, and it is all because of our great support.

Thanks

Todd Utpadel
Club Manager

F.Y.I.

Going to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial is a real meaningful experience, especially for those veterans who served in the Armed Forces six decades ago.  Thus, there’s a possibility that another Honor Flight this Fall will provide an opportunity for still more area veterans to make this trip to the nation’s capital city.

Those of us who are members of Post 56, the VFW or DAV are aware of other World War II era veterans who deserve this opportunity to make this very special trip.  In fact, I have a strong hunch there are enough eligible World War II veterans in Freeborn and Mower Counties to fill out the full roster for a future Honor Flight.

Now I’d like to shift the topic to a more personal subject.  About a year ago I commented that the editorship or whatever it is for this publication should go to someone else.  I don’t really care who it is, but I’m sure he or she will have a better connection with the activities of Post 56.

Auxiliary News

Our June meeting will be the last until Sept.  I hope many of you can join us as we honor our long time members.

The evening will begin with a Pot-luck supper @ 6 pm.  All members and guests are invited.  Just bring a dish to pass unless you are an invited guest.  Our Dept. President will be our guest that evening also.

Our unit has selected our 2 Girl’s Staters:  Whitney Walker and Janet Lawler.  The education chairman and her committee awarded the scholarships to: Alexander Ciota and Kevin Zogg.  The Citizenship medals were given to Joseph Hubly and Emily Peterson.

These special awards are made possible by your support of our activities and your dues.  Remember to support our club.

During the summer we will be at the Farmers Market every month and will be having a food stand at the County Fair.

Remember we do not meet again until September.

President Pat
