June  2005

Commander's Message

Welcome to hopefully the beginning of summer.  First, let me thank everyone that helped with the project of updating the lounge.  It has taken some time but hopefully you will enjoy the change and even invite friends along with you when you come in.  To help celebrate this great completion event please mark your calendar for Saturday, June 18th from 2-5pm for some free snacks and special drinks and I can personally thank you for your help.

June starts out with installation of new officers on June 6th with supper (swiss steak) at 6:00 pm.  The new offices will be Cmdr. Tom Henderson, 1st Vice Arnie Mulso, 2nd Vice Dan Peterson, new trustees Bob Indrelie and Dave Olson.  Thank you for serving plus thanks to the people continuing on the board.

Report from the District meeting will have to come next month as this is going to print before the meeting on Sat., May 21.  Hopefully some of you could make the meeting and attend the parade.

Congratulations to the S.A.L. and Auxiliary for their help and work they do plus the officers they have elected for next year.

We still are in need of bingo workers on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Also, anyone that has or is aware of a uniform not being used anymore if you would please turn it into the Post so someone could use it, it would save a big expense for the Post.  These uniforms cost about $300 each.  Thanks for your help.

Major expense:  Yes we have replaced the ice machine.  It is new and cost about $3,800.  Next is the air conditioning/heating system.  It is being looked at being totally replaced and estimates are maybe as high as $45,000.  The need is there so we are investigating more but the Post will need a fund raiser for ourselves.  So we scheduled a grilled pork chop dinner on Saturday, June 25th at the Legion.  Probably starting at 5:00 pm and going until whenever.

We haven’t gotten to our goal for membership yet so please ask if they would like to join as we are at 96% of 1150.

Let’s support our Legion baseball team by attending their games.  Schedule is posted on the bulletin board and on the website.  Thanks for your support.

June has many dates of remembrance like June 14th – Flag Day (US Army founded in 1775), June 19th – Father’s Day, June 22nd – Pledge of Allegiance recognized by Congress and GI bill signed into law in 1944, and June 25th – the Korean War began.  Fly a Flag and support a veteran.

For God and Country,

Ernie Mulso, Commander Post 56

F.Y.I.

I’m turning over this part of the publication to Bob Miller for his special message:

“The congratulatory responses received following the Legionnaire of the Year award were so very humbling.  The distinction was received as the highest honor that could be attributed to me.

My membership in Leo Carey Post #56 has always been very meaningful.  I have often said that when I put on my Legion uniform and serving on the honor guard causes me to be very proud.

I am so pleased to serve with Post #56 where the greatest of comrades prevail.

I salute you all, For God and Country”

It is worth adding right here that Bob has been one of the buglers participating in area funerals and other ceremonial activities.  He also served as the commander of Leo Carey Post 56 in 2000-2001.

LEGION HERITAGE

Here’s a more detailed explanation for all the symbols in our official American Legion emblem:

  1. THE RAYS OF THE SUN form the background of our proud Emblem, and suggest that the Legion’s principles will dispel the darkness of violence and evil.
  2. THE WREATH forms the center, in living memory of those brave comrades who gave their lives in the service of the United States , that liberty might endure.
  3. THE STAR, victory symbol of WWI, signalizes as well as honor, glory, and constancy.  The letters U.S. leave no doubt as to the brightest star in the Legion’s sky.
  4. TWO LARGE RINGS.  The outer one stands for the rehabilitation of our sick and disabled buddies.  The inner one denotes the welfare of America ’s children.
  5. TWO SMALL RINGS set upon the star.  The outer pledges loyalty and Americanism.  The inner is for service to our communities, our states and the nation.
  6. The words AMERICAN LEGION tie the whole together for truth, remembrance, constancy, honor, service, rehabilitation, child welfare, loyalty, Americanism.

Lost and not yet claimed

Millie Andrejewsi reports that a single gold earring was found in the hallway of the Legion Club on March 21.  She says this earring appears to be very nice and could be very special to someone.  Millie said a call to Party Line regarding this lost item didn’t provide a claimant.  Maybe this publication can give this earring a chance to join its mate.  For more information call Millie at 373-9143

Club Update

Summer is here after a strange spring…The American Legion has been here for you to take advantage of special days and evenings.  Tuesdays still offer extremely well priced menu serving from 4:30 – 8 pm.  We still have our famous burgers along with a fish, chicken, and pork sandwiches all for just $2 each.

Wednesdays menu has been expanded each week with something that we have always offered as well as new items such as wraps and burritos.  Check us out each Bar Bingo night to see what we have cooking.

Thursdays are still the special menu night with a rotating menu each week.  We plan this out a month in advance so we can put it in the flyer.  Cut out  the section for the Thursday menu and put it on your refrigerator so you don’t forget about our exciting food.

Fridays and Saturdays bring our Bar Menu which is served 5-8pm in the newly remodeled lounge.  You really should come in to see the new lounge.  Our Commander Arnie Mulso has worked extremely hard to raise the money needed for this project.  Congratulations and Thank You, Arnie.

Karaoke with Laurie is still a big hit here on Friday evenings…her schedule for the fun this month is June 10, 17, and 24.

BREAKFAST BREAKFAST…the 4th Sunday of each month offers our famous pancake breakfast.  For only $5 you get pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, milk, & coffee.  We are expanding the hours by a ½ hour to accommodate the later church goers.  8am to 12:30 pm.

Remember your American Legion for any upcoming events that you have.  We do parties, receptions, groom’s dinners, graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, or whatever you need us to do for you.

We are having a Pork Chop Dinner on Saturday, June 25 starting at 5pm and serving to 7:30 or later.  All volunteers are welcome to help raise funds for projects that are deserving.  We need a new air conditioning system and just purchased a new ice machine.  As well as trying to help all the Commanders projects.

The American Legion State Golf Tournament is the first weekend in August.  Sign up soon…
