Commander's Message

By the time you receive this flyer the installation of officers will be over and the new board will be in place for the coming year.  I would like to thank past Commander Dave for the great job he has done this past year. I will be counting on his assistance and advice in the coming year.

I would also like to thank all the people who have agreed to serve on the board this next year. Without their time and effort our organization would not survive.

Another key player is our Club Manager, Todd Utpadel. His efforts to promote and manage our club are beginning to payoff. As evidenced by our improving financial condition and the many activities being held at the Legion.

A big Thank You to our bartenders, servers, kitchen and gambling staff. Without them our club would not continue to function. In the coming year we would like to encourage our members to participate in as many activities as possible. Feel free to contact myself or attend a post meeting held the 3rd Monday of every month with suggestions to improve our operation.

Our appreciation goes out to Ed Shannon for his years of service to the Legion as historian and editor of our Newsletter. Ed has indicated he will be stepping down this year to pursue other interests. We will be looking for someone to replace Ed. Anyone interested please contact me.

Thanks and Best Wishes go out to Bernie Priebe who has been our Adjutant for many years. Bernie has done an excellent job in fulfilling this role and has decided to relinquish his duties as Adjutant and concentrate on membership. We are happy to have Bernie in this position and I have appointed Arnie Mulso as Adjutant. Arnie has been assisting Bernie with the Adjutants duties for some time now and I am sure will be calling on Bernie for advice.

We are proud of our Honor Guard and the excellent job they have been doing. Billy Christenson puts in many hours of planning and phone calling. Thanks Billy.

We have a lot of activities scheduled for the month of July. Consult the calendar in the flyer and Todd will give us more information in his letter.

I would like to thank everyone for your confidence in electing me as your Post Commander for 2009-2010. I will do my best to represent Post 56 as we continue to move ahead.

For God and Country
Rex F Stotts

Club Update

Todd Utpadel

Summer is Upon Us;

First, a huge thanks to Dave for all of his support and hard work. It was greatly appreciated. Next, congrats to Rex, I am looking forward to our year together.

July, is going to be a busy month the club will be open with our regular menu on July3rd. The club will be closed on the 4th. Enjoy, the fireworks.   We will again be at the Farmers Market on the 15th of July.  A huge thanks  everyone who helps with that.

The first of June I held an employee meeting to talk about the club, handle a few rumors and watch a movie called “Taking Chance”, this movie made quite an impression on the staff as it was a true story about a soldier killed in Iraq, and his journey home. I feel that this movie has a huge story to tell so I asked a couple of board members, Arnie Mulso and Dave Olson to watch the movie and they agreed. So, on Sunday July 19th we are going to host a movie night. We will be watching the movie, then Rex, and I will talk a little about a vision for the club in his year at the helm. And, Rex will unveil his commander’s project for the year. So, if you want to watch a great movie, and see where the club is going please try to attend. Please, call the club if you are planning on attending.

On Friday the 24th of the month the Historical Museum will be holding a Swiss Steak supper to help raise funds for the museum. I want to ask everyone to try to attend and support the museum with this project.

We will be having 2 breakfasts, the first is hosted by the VFW on the 19th. This will also be the kick off for the Korean War Veterans tribute. This event will be the same as the  one for the Vietnam Vets that was co-hosted by the VFW and Post 56. The display will be up from July 19th thru August 1st . The second breakfast will be the 26th of July, so please support the VFW and Post thru these breakfasts.

And, finally the S.A.L. golf tourney is set for the 1st of August at Green Lea Golf Course.  You can sign your team up. It will be a 4 man best shot format.

So as you can see we are very busy. Please continue to support the club by attending a few of these events.

Todd Utpadel
Club Manager

F.Y.I.

Sometimes events at the Legion come up in a hurry and thus can’t be publicized in this publication.  An excellent example is the Honor Flight Supper on Friday, June 26, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Despite the fact that this event was scheduled just prior to June 11, there’s a good chance this newsletter will be delivered by the postal carriers before June 26.  Anyway, we certainly tried to promote this event.

Here are more details about this special supper:  The burger basket will include a 5 oz hamburger and french fries.  There will be a condiment table to top off your burger -- cheese, tomato, onion and so on.  The cost of the basket will be $7.00 with the Honor Flight receiving all profits from the meals.

Of all the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation.  Now, with over one thousand World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.

Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices.  We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials.  HONOR FLIGHT Network is our way of paying a small tribute to those who gave so much - a memorable, safe, and rewarding TOUR of HONOR!!!

Please keep in mind that 16 Albert Lea and three Glenville World War II veterans went to Washington, D.C., on May 2.  Hopefully, more area veterans will be going on the next Honor Flight in October.
This is an activity worth our support!

Editor

Super Salute

Paul J. Andrejewski was born Aug. 9, 1924.  He died June 4, 2009.  Despite his participation in many Post 56 activities, he wasn’t listed as a member of the Albert Lea Legion.  That’s why he isn’t part of TAPS this month.

Yet, this World War II Army veteran was a member of the Legion and VFW up in Waseca.  A Legionnaire, he was Legion Post 228 Commander, 1st District Commander, State Commander and National Vice Commander.

Auxiliary News

First a correction.  In the last newsletter I switched the names of our scholarship winners.  The Citizenship winners were Kevin Zogg and Alexander Ciota while the scholarships went to Joseph Hubly and Emily Peterson.

We also were notified by the Department Office that Christianna Johnson of the class of 2009 has been awarded a $1000 scholarship from the Department Education committee.  There were 139 applications and 7 scholarships awarded.

On June 19th the 2009-2010 officers will have been installed.  They are:
President - Pat Johannsen
1st Vice - Janet Scherb
2nd Vice - Bonnie Schneider
Exec Board - Angi Larson and Karen Cibert
Sec - Vonnie Oftedahl
Tres - Rita Anderson
Chaplain - Dorothy Snider
Sgt @ Arms - Isy Lee

Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Commander Rex Stotts and his officers.

The National office will be mailing the 2010 dues notices out in August.  Unit 56 will be hosting their annual free luncheon late in August but your dues can be mailed or dropped off anytime.

Our first meeting will be Sept. 2.

Enjoy the summer.  Come and enjoy the many activities our club has to offer.

President Pat
