Commander's
Message

Hello Everyone,
First, I would like to thank the membership of Post 56 in putting their
trust in me to be Commander for the year of 2008-2009. As you are reading
this flyer, I will have returned from my annual Canadian fishing trip.
I thank everyone for attending the installation of new Post 56 officers
program held on June 27th and also thank the people for stepping up to the plate
and accepting this position. New Post Officers and Officers appointed to
serve the term of Commander are listed in the flyer.
I want to thank Gary Anderson for the great job he has done this past year
and he will be a valuable asset for me to draw on as I proceed as
Commander of Post 56. He had a good team and made a lot of good things
happen and I thank him for stepping up for a second term as Commander. One
great event Gary has promised to head up again is the corn and brat feed he
started last year and hope it will be an annual event.
Our club manager, Todd Utpadel, has been making big strides in getting the club
on the road to recovery. Don’t forget to thank him the next time you see
him. I have thought of a lot of things that I could and would like
to do for a commander’s project but they all cost money that we don’t have.
So, with that said, this year I would like to work on getting our
debt reduced as much as possible. Arnie Mulso has done a good job with
this program and I would like to see him continue to chair that project.
We have had a lot of members and friends of the American Legion contribute
to our debt elimination and for that I am truly grateful. I would like to
possibly have a fundraiser every month in which the proceeds of would strictly
go for debt reduction. After we see how the reduction debt goes maybe I
will use President Kennedy’s quote, “Don’t ask what the club can do for
you! Ask what you can do for the club!” You don’t have to wait
for a call to volunteer, you can simply call the club and sign up to help with
an event or a special project. With everybody on the same team we can do
it!
Again we will be proudly represented at the July 3rd parade. Gary is
planning on another successful parade. Todd and Bill Goette are planning
on cooking something up for the July 4th weekend. Watch the bulletin
board!
If you haven’t seen the American Legion Baseball schedule yet, all the games
are posted on the bulletin board. Stop by the games and support the team.
We hope to have a breakfast fundraiser on July 13th for the baseball team.
Hope to see you there!
I haven’t heard yet what date our troops will be home but keep posted as we
will want to have a welcome home event when they do. Their time is getting
short so keep them in your prayers that all of them return home safely.
I thank everyone for the past accomplishments and help but look forward to
things that need to be done to keep and make the club and Post more viable for
us and the community. THANK YOU!
A little bit about me. I was in the Army from 1961 to 1963 and
served most of my time in Germany. My wife’s name is Sandy and we have
three children and eight grandchildren. They are Bruce and Laurie
Mullenbach and they have 4 children, Ben, Holly, Devon and Parker. Al and
Michelle Mullenbach and they have 2 children, Whitney and Jordan. Todd and
Julie Ulve and they have 2 children, Alex and Blake.
See you at the club!

Club
Update
Hello Everybody;
WOW!!!! It’s July already. First, I want to extend a Huge
Thank You to Gary Anderson for all of his help. The club continues to go very
well, we have started Texas Hold’em on Monday nights at what a turn out we are
averaging over 50 players a week. Our ¼ lb. burgers on Tuesday nights have also
become a huge success. We are planning a burger and brat feed on the 3rd
of July before the parade, and back by popular demand a smelt and burger feed on
the 4th. Continue to watch the calendar as something is always going on at the
club.
After last month’s letter I have had a lot of people make comments about their
club, and a lot have asked what they can do to help insure it’s continued
success. So, I put together some interesting numbers. As of the end of June we
have a total of 1658 members between the Legion, the Auxiliary and SAL. As I
mentioned it takes about $6,500 per week to operate the club. If each member
spent $3.92 per week we could meet that goal, and if each member were to donate
$51.26 we could retire all debt on the club. So as we go forward together
we will continue to make this a club for all of it’s members to be proud of.
Thanks
Todd

F.Y.I.
Next year will be a special time for Leo Carey Post 56. That’s when the
post members, their families, and the community can celebrate the 90th year for
this post and the American Legion being an important part of life in Albert Lea.
In reality, this post and the Legion itself can jointly observe the ninth decade
anniversary. Both were created in 1919 by World War I veterans. In
fact, two of these local veterans were delegates to the first American Legion
caucus held in St. Louis, Mo., in early May 1919. They were William P.
Sturtz and John C. Caldwell.
In 1988, Odean Berg wrote the following historical account for the Freeborn
County Heritage book:
“The name ‘Leo Carey’ was given to Albert Lea’s post at the time of its
organization in 1919. Because Leo Carey was the first Freeborn County
veteran to lose his life in combat in World War I, he became the post’s
namesake. Leo Martin Carey (1894-1918) joined the U.S. Navy in July of
1917 and was later assigned to the U.S.S. Tyler. His ship was torpedoed in
the Strait of Gibraltar on May 2, 1918. Carey, who was at the radio
controls when the attack occurred, wet down with the ship.”
Okay, folks, let’s just see what evolves next year.
We have a partial list of the new post officers. Some of those listed from
Sgt. at Arms on down to the last one, Gambling Manager, are subject to change
and will be revised whenever the new people are named for those other
posts.

as their Auxiliary we can help in this way.
Thank you for electing me to serve as your President. I hope to see

It has been one full calendar year since we started our debt reduction program.
We have accomplished this: Reduced debt by $26,660; 96 members or
friends of the American Legion have donated; our payoff would be $83,195. Thank
you everyone that has donated and if you haven’t we still are accepting
donations.
