American Legion Post 56 Monthly Bulletin

January 2010

Commander's Message

Greetings,

Time seems to go by so quickly and last month I forgot to wish everyone seasons greetings, so I hope every one had a wonderful holiday season and were able to enjoy family and friends.  Again hoping you had a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

January and February, the two months we worry about for activities, are filling up nicely.

We continue to search for new ways to generate income and increase business.

Todd’s letter will fill us in on what activities are scheduled.

The Post seems to be holding its own financially and we appreciate the job all our employees are doing.

The cold weather seems to keep everyone close to home but we encourage members to participate in as many activities as they can.

Saturdays continue to be our slowest day and we may have to adjust our hours of operation.  Unless this changes we will be closing at 4:00 PM on Saturdays starting January 1st.

I am still researching areas that we can use for a Commanders Project and will keep everyone informed on that matter.

The Club Manager, Adjutant, 1st Vice Commander and myself have met and laid out four areas of operation  for the Post and have started to examine the positive and negative portions of each.  The four areas are, Food, Bar, Banquet Facilities and Gambling.  As we continue to meet and examine these operations we will report our findings to the Executive Board and Post and will keep our members informed as to recommendations we might suggest to make our Post more efficient.  We seem to be making progress and would like input from our members.

Join us on New Years Day for Tom and Jerry’s are being served from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

The Post is at 80% of our membership drive and would like to thank all who have renewed their membership.  We would like to sign up the remaining 20% as soon as possible to complete this project and reach our goal.

Members who wish to donate to the Building Fund may do so by stopping at the Chamber Office and making their contribution.

For God and Country
Rex F. Stotts
Commander

Club Update

Happy New Year;

We made it. It’s 2010, the snowstorms missed us and we are ready to start the beginning of another great year. We want everyone to remember that we now have BINGO 2 nights a week. Wednesday and Sunday. Texas Hold-em, is still being played on Monday nights. We have changed our menu and now feature a 10 oz sirloin and walleye for under $10.00. Watch the calendar and continue to support our club where you can.

Thanks
Todd Utpadel
Club Manager

The following short editorial commentary is from the December 1939 issue of Albert Lea’s Community Magazine.  Yet, 70 years later these thoughts are rather prophetic for what we’ll be contending and suffering with in 2010.

“Pretty soon we are going to be in the midst of the 1940 (and now 2010) political campaign in which plenty of speeches and condemnations will be tossed about.  It’s part of American life, and a very amusing one at times.  There are many times when you feel very disgusted and pay no attention to the political pictures, but it is the duty of every citizen to at least know what is going on, and what each side has to offer, so that we can exercise our franchise as an intelligent voter.  After all, we as voters are responsible for the men (and women) in office and it should be considered an obligation on our part to pay attention to the political part of our lives.  If we don’t, we may some time lose it.”

Auxiliary News

As you read this we are finally into winter.  I hope everyone had a happy Holiday season.  Please remember to continue to help those less fortunate.

The community food shelves will have great need during the coming cold months.

Remember your Auxiliary does not meet in January.  Our next meeting will be Feb. 3rd, 2010.

We are planning a salad luncheon late in Feb. and need one or two people to be chairmen of this event.  If you can be this person please let me know and we will set a definite date.

This spring we will be collecting items for the Ronald McDonald House.  This can be cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies (including heat and serve meals, canned soups, and box mixes especially those that do not need added ingredients except fresh meats).  After the holidays I will leave a marked box in the  coat room.  If you cannot get to the club just call me at 373-1761 and I will stop and pick up the items.

President Pat
