American Legion Post 56 Monthly Bulletin

February 2010

Commander's Message

Greetings,

February started out to be a slow month but turned into a very busy month with lots of activities being booked for the American Legion.  We will be having breakfasts on every Sunday of the month.

Starting with February 7th the Archery Club has a breakfast.  On the 14th the Pelican Breeze has booked a breakfast and on the 21st the Noon Kiwanis is having a Belgian Waffle event.  The 28th is our regular Post breakfast, so as you see we will need many volunteers to make sure we continue to keep our reputation as the place to go for Sunday morning breakfast.  We would appreciate it if you would consider volunteering for one of these mornings so some of our regular volunteers can have a well deserved break.

The Board continues to look for ways to generate extra income for the Post and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We continue to have our Wednesday night bingo and are watching closely our Sunday night bingo to see if this will produce a profit.  I would like to thank all those who have worked both of these nights.

Gambling has continued to help us with finances and contributes whenever they can as allowed by law.  Be sure to thank these people for all they do to make sure that our gambling operation runs smoothly.  Not only do we have the ladies who operate the ticket booth but we have our behind-the-scenes people who run the office and take care of the many reports that have to be sent to the state.

On February 19th at 7:00 PM we are having a benefit for the Honor Guard at Southwest Little Theater to raise funds so they can continue their much valued service to the community and surrounding area.  This will be a group from Branson, Mo. and should be a very enjoyable evening.  Continue to watch for more information on this.

Since the city has turned us down on our proposal for a sign on the front of our building, I have had to consider a new Commanders Project.  With the help of the Honor Guard I have decided to replace all carpet, both in the dining room and in the bar area. Any financial help would be greatly appreciated.

We would like to reach our membership goal and encourage people to send in their dues and invite other qualified people to join.
Please continue to support our American Legion so we can continue our mission of honoring our past and present Veterans.

For God and Country
Rex F. Stotts
Commander

Club Update

Help A Neighbor Month;

At least that will be the theme as we have 12 different non-profit events at the legion this month.  We will have a breakfast here every Sunday in February, along with other events so please watch the calendar. As, you may have noticed we have discontinued the buffet for the winter. With the weather being so unpredictable it made the potential for loss on the buffet to great. So we are offering our regular menu and a few specials each Thursday night and will continue to seat in the back. Also, we have changed our lunch menu, and we have more choices now for lunch.  So stop in and help support your American Legion.

Thanks
Todd

F.Y.I.

Here are two challenges for the members of Post 56.

The first challenge is to get more contributions for this monthly bulletin.  Let’s call these written or typed comments letters to the editor, or better yet, comments from and for the post’s members.

These comments should be positive and concise.  As I stated earlier, let’s avoid any political foolishness or any comments that insult anyone.  I’m no longer in a position to say these commentaries should include the author’s name.  That decision is up to someone else.

The second challenge is for some other post members to volunteer for this editor position, or whatever else it is.  I have made several attempts to let someone else who is younger and a lot more active in post activities to become the editor or whatever.

Thus, after eight or nine years, I will positively terminate my involvement with this monthly bulletin at the end of May, and hopefully even earlier.

Ed Shannon

Judi Olson, the nice person and fellow veteran who handles the Dollar-a-Month (D.A.M.) aspect of post activities, retired in December 2009 after 27 years of employment with Security Bank Minnesota.  However, she will continue to take care of the D.A.M., and that certainly deserves a super salute.

Auxiliary News

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Winter is slipping by at a fast rate and spring should be just around the corner.

It has been decided to postpone the spring salad luncheon until April.  You will see more about it in the next newsletter.

The next Auxiliary meeting is on Feb. 3rd with a board meeting on the 1st.

The nominating committee will soon be looking for officers for 2010-2011.  Please consider saying yes if asked.

Remember also that we have many scholarships to be awarded each year both locally and in the Department.  If you have any questions call me or Angi Larsen.

Remember to bring items for the Ronald McDonald house to our meeting.
