Commander's Message

Hi Everyone:

Were you able to keep warm through these bitter cold days? One thing for sure is that it has to get better. Winter is hard on the club because of the cold weather and a lot of folks have gone south to warmer climates. I can’t really blame them as Sandy and I plan on going south for a few weeks the end of February thru the 1st of March.

December was not a good month financially for the club for the following reasons: 1. We had to close because of the snow and cold, simply, people just didn’t go out. 2. No bingo on 3 nights. 3. Three party cancellations. Example is one week was $3000 and another was $5000 when we need at least $6500 per week to operate. December looks like a loss of around $8000. If you have noticed some changes at the club it is because much discussion and ideas have taken place to try and remedy this situation. January has already shown some improvement. Club Manager Todd has some things in place so read his message and sign up for those events, such as Super Bowl Party and the Valentine’s Party he is planning.  Please come up and support your club if you can.

See Wes Halverson if you would like to buy a raffle ticket for the prizes given away on Super Bowl Sunday and he also needs some help selling meat packs that day.

I want to thank Billy Christenson for all that he does at the Legion. He does a wonderful job with the Honor Guard and we get many compliments. I want to thank Minnesota Corrugated Box for donating two boxes for the shipment of 10 rifles we had to send back to National. The next time you see Billy ask him how he got the nickname RAF. Also, I would like to thank Dennis Smith for maintaining the rifles the honor guard uses for their events for the last three years. A big thanks goes to Steve Hoelscher, David Skogheim and Corald Peterson for stepping up to the plate and taking that over. See, Dennis, it took three people to replace you (smile).

At our last meeting David Olson wanted approval to work on a few things for some events coming up.

1. Vietnam Veterans Day – March 29th. 2. Veterans Day at the Capital – June 13th 3. Korean War Armistice Day – July 27th.  Please volunteer or help him if he calls on you. Thanks David!

Last week the club donated our aluminum cans to the Eagles Cancer Telethon and came to around 300 lbs which related to about $120. Also several American Legion Members helped out the Telethon which I am sure they are grateful for that. Thanks Eagles Club for doing a great job fighting cancer.

Thanks for the help we had in the kitchen for the Youth Bowling Fundraiser. It was a great success and we served over 300 that morning. A lot of new faces were there and they want to come back next year. I hope some of them come to our Post Breakfast on the 25th.

Our walk-in cooler is in bad need of a new metal floor and needs to be repaired. We are in the process of getting that fixed with some materials at cost and volunteer help. I will be doing this as a commander’s project and plan on using volunteer help to keep the cost down.

People have told me that my Commander’s Letter is so long that the print in the flyer is so small that they need a magnifier glass to read it. I will be the first to admit that I am not a letter writer but I just want everybody to know what’s going on at the club. Thanks for putting up with my newsletters.

For God and Country
Commander Dave Mullenbach

Club Update

2009 Is Underway;

I wonder if any of you were waiting for 2008 to get over as much as I. 2009 is off to a better start then 2008 ended. As Dave mentioned we had a bad December, our January is looking better. We are making changes and asking some of our members for a little volunteer help. The main areas are in the kitchen, washing dishes, and in cleaning. These two areas that seem to be the easiest to find help for. If you would be willing to help please let me know.

We have several events coming up. Super Bowl Sunday, we will open at 1:00 and have a Texas Hold-Em Tourney, there is no entry fee. That day we are trying something new. For $15 per person or $25 per couple you can eat for the day. And the menu will include Chili, Oyster Stew, Bacon Cheeseburger Soup, Sloppy Joes, and a wide variety of appetizers. The game will start around 5:30. It should be a great game and we are having the raffle drawing at half time.

Then on Valentine’s Day we are planning a very special evening. There will be a social hour at 5:00, a four course dinner starting at 6:00, and a Show Starting at 7:00. All ladies attending will receive a rose, there will be a complementary glass of Champagne for each person, the menu will include salad, soup, a choice of Walleye, Rib Eye Steak, Shrimp, or Chicken Kiev, and a surprise dessert.  For your listening pleasure that evening I have assembled some of the finest musicians from Southern Minnesota to create a show just for the Legion that evening. It will feature the music of Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and more. The cost for the evening will be $29.50 per person or $50.00 per couple. Reservations will be required.

Also, the Honor Guard will host a Steak and Fish fry on Saturday the 7th of February. The Albert Lea Township Fire Department will be having a Hot Beef and Hot Pork Feed on the 21st.  The Noon Kiwanis is having a waffle Breakfast on 15th, and Daybreakers Kiwanis is having a Fish fry on the 28th.

So as you can see if the Good Lord willing and the Snow don’t Come, we should have a busy February.

Again, Thank You for your continued support, lately it has been needed more then you know.

F.Y.I.

Not long ago local historical researcher Kevin Savick found a Tribune column based on World War II military slang terms.  These now mostly forgotten terms were featured in the daily Albert Lea Tommy columns written by Tribune Editor Burt May and published in the April 7, 1944 issue.
Here’s the first half of these gems Burt called “war vocabulary”:

Big John - What a new recruit is called.
Back to Your Hole - A command meaning ‘Return to your room’.
Armored Cow - Canned milk.
Bubble Dancer - A dish washer, comes from the fact that everyone gets covered with suds.
Bullneck Engineers - Soldier ditch diggers.
Button Chopper - Name given to laundry since clothes come back minus there buttons.
Dog Show - This is the nickname that has been given to the process of foot inspection.
Dog Tags - Identification tags.
Foxholes - This is a name first given by General MacArthur and since adopted by our troops.
Foofoo - Perfume, a name given by the WAC’s.
General Car - Wheelbarrow in the Army.
GI - All government issues.
Grass - Salad on Army meal tables.
Hashburner - A cook.
Mud on a Shingle - Hash on toast.

We’ll have the rest of these wartime military slang terms in the next FYI.

Auxiliary News

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It is already February so Spring must be just around the corner.  I hope.  We will soon be making plans for our Spring Salad Luncheon.  We are still in need of chairmen for this fundraiser.

The nominating committee will also be looking for officers for the coming year.  It is a great organization to be active in.  Please consider giving of your time and effort.

The club is having a special Valentine dinner party on Feb. 14th.  For those who enjoyed the New Year’s Eve party this will include a special evening of music. Make plans now to support this wonderful club we have.

The kitchen is looking for a couple of items that possibly one of you might have gathering dust in a back cupboard.  They could use a heavy duty portable mixer and a standard mixer.  If you have either I would be happy to pick it up.  Just call me at 373-1761.

Remember our meetings.  The first Wed. of the month at 7 pm.  We will be packing boxes for our service people in Feb.  Please bring items to include. Books, hard candy, cards, etc.

See you on Feb. 4th.

President Pat
