Commander's
Message
Hi
everybody:
Where is the time going? I guess time gets away from you when things are busy
and that seems the way it has been at the club. There are a lot of things going
on so always check the bulletin board or your flyer. Thanksgiving
will have been here and gone before you get this flyer and Christmas will be
around the corner.
Club manager Todd has been giving some good financial reports the last couple of
months and is always trying something to keep that going. A special thanks
to Laurie and Bruce for keeping Friday nights packed with Karaoke. Remember, it
has a lot to do with all of you supporting and volunteering at the club. I thank
everyone for that! I will let you read his report on the next page of this
flyer so you can hear it from him. Don’t
forget to thank him for everything he is doing to try to make this club the
success that it is becoming. THANK YOU, TODD!
I have heard some confusion on the “Wipe Out the Debt.” (W.O.D.) and “Fill
the Barrel” programs. These are not the same programs, although the money
raised goes to the same place. W.O.D. was started under my command after July
1st. This seems to be going really well as we continue to get checks of $51.26
or more from our members and that is why those of you are being recognized with
tent cards above the bar. We are in the process of getting a poster made to hang
at the club for those of us that helped Fill the Barrel last year when that
program was in effect to eliminate the debt. Once we get this debt paid up and
burn the mortgage we will be able to again do what we use to do for this
community. Thanks to all who have supported both programs!
You can support the Pheasant Dinners for Hospitalized Veterans by giving a
donation of $7.00/bird. Someone at the club will help you and make sure a tent
card gets put up for you to be recognized. If we get our donations in by
December 10th we will be listed in the January issue of “The Minnesota
Legionnaire”.
Veterans Day was a big success thanks to the VFW folks. A special thanks to
S.F.C. Jeffrey Dahlen for excellent messages at the Freeborn County Government
Center in the morning and at the American Legion, Post 56 in the afternoon. The
events kept us all busy all day. Thanks Commander Jim Doty!
We now have the tickets for sale for a 42” TV and 8 gas cards. Nine prizes
will be given away on Super Bowl Sunday. You do not need to be present to win.
Please contact Wes Halverson for tickets and more information. I am sure Wes
will sign you out some books of tickets to sell also! Please help out on this.
Thanks to those who help with the Post Breakfast on November 23rd. That has
become the best breakfast in town!
Thanks to Billy Christenson for arranging for the Tom & Jerry’s on
Thanksgiving Day. I understand things went very well. There will also be Tom
& Jerry’s on New Year’s Day from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Thanks Billy and
all the volunteers who helped!
We will be ring bells for the Salvation Army on Thursday, December 11th at
Nelson’s County Market from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. There is a sign up sheet at
the club for those who would like to help.
We will again this year deliver poinsettias to all the veterans that are in
nursing homes or home bound on Saturday, December 13th. Please volunteer to help
on that day.
I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the
Mullenbach’s to the American Legion Family and Staff.
For God and Country
Dave Mullenbach, Commander

F.Y.I.
Back in the days when the Golden Corral was located on East Main Street, all
veterans and active duty members of the armed forces were given a free evening
meal at the buffet counter on November 11. I’m not too sure just how
long this took place. Anyway, it was a nice gesture from an eating place
which no longer exists.
However, there’s another place in Albert Lea which saluted veterans with a
free breakfast on Tuesday, November 11. This was the Hy-Vee Store on North
Bridge Avenue. Special thanks goes to the store’s manager, Al Weisert,
and the staff who provided this nice gesture.
Now, if there are other places in the area that made it a special point to do
something extra and significant on Veterans Day, let me know with a note. We
can certainly give them a Super Salute in the January issue.

Auxiliary
News
Happy Holidays!!
A special welcome to all our new Auxiliary members. I hope you can join us
for the December pot-luck preceding the meeting on December 3rd. You and
your family or guest are welcome. We will eat at 6 p.m.
I am asking that everyone bring at least 2 items for the food shelf.
Your Auxiliary has given a $300 donation to both the Gift Shop and Dollar Bill
Shower. These programs benefit our veterans currently in the V.A.
hospitals and homes.
In the community we share the ringing of the Red Kettle Bell and can all take
part in the sharing trees that are in local churches and the mall.
Just a reminder. We do not meet in January. The Board will meet on
December 1st and on January 5th.
A special Thank You to our District 24 staff. November was National Education
Week and treats were sent from your Auxiliary to all the school staff and bus
drivers.
Wishing you a Happy Holiday Season
President Pat

SUPER SALUTE
Because of the Veterans Day observance here in Albert Lea, we have several folks
who deserve Super Salutes.
First, let’s thank Jim Doty, commander of Freemond Madson Post 447 of
the VFW for his leadership with the programs at Southwest Middle School, the
Freeborn County Government Center and the Post 56 clubrooms on November 11.
Second, a special salute goes to my Tribune colleagues Brie Cohen
(photography) and Sarah Stultz (reporting) for their coverage of the
courthouse program.
Third, an extra special salute goes to another Tribune colleague, Geri
McShane, for her excellent photo of the VFW Post 447 Color Guard which was
used for the cover of the special section issued on November 10.
Fourth, a special salute goes to Steve Oman of Radio Station KATE for
broadcasting the 11 a.m. program on November 11.
And, fifth, a Super Salute goes to everyone who participated in this traditional
observance of Veterans Day on November 11.
