American Legion Post 56 Monthly Bulletin

August  2005

Commander's Message

Hi, I'm Tom Henderson the new incoming commander.  I just retired from teaching science in Glenville-Emmons High School after 32 years with the district.  I also retired from the Army having served 32 years of service active and reserve.  Before retiring I thought that I would have lots of time to pursue hobbies like fishing, motorcycling hunting, etc.  But between the Legion, farming, helping others (because I'm retired now) my leisure time seems to have evaporated.  Oh, well, so much for myself.

The new air conditioning is fully functional.  Come in and enjoy the coolness.  Summer at the Legion is traditionally slow, but we do have many activities.  The 2nd Monday of every month is our executive board meeting except for the months of August and September, which will be the 2nd Tuesday, because of the Van Ryswyck and Goodnature benefits.  The post meeting is the 3rd Monday of each month and we need more people to attend.  Each week - Tuesdays is burger night, Wednesday is bar bingo - Billy C. could use extra help there, Thursdays is bingo in the back room - Bill N. could use help there also, and Fridays is Karaoke.  We will be having various fundraisers for projects, such as replacing the overhead door in the basement, a new computer for Bernie, a new back door, etc.  So come in and support us.  Sunday, August 28 is breakfast.  Here's looking to a good year.

For God and Country,

Tom Henderson, Commander Post 56

F.Y.I.

The death of U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Corey J. Goodnature, formerly of Albert Lea, in eastern Afghanistan on June 28, 2005, deserves a special place of honor and recognition in this publication.

Perhaps the best comments about this country's latest casualty of the present warfare in Asia were made in his Tribune obituary on July 10, 2005.  Someone wrote with deep sincerity the following:

"Cory was a quiet man who was dedicte4d to serving his country and family.  Corey died doing something he deeply believe in and is a true hero to our nation, his family, and friends.  We are all grateful for Corey's undeniable dedication and sacrifice as well as that of those he served and died with.  This dedication and sacrifice allow all of us to enjoy our freedoms and liberty to this great nation"

With this Tribune obituary is a small flag insignia.  It serves as an added salute and has appeared on many of the Tribune obituaries during the past several years to indicate the deceased was a member or veteran of the nation's armed forces.

Now, how can this flag insignia be placed on a Tribune obituary?  The answer is easy.  It comes as a request from the family to the funeral home which is handling the arrangements and prepare the obituary.  I might add right here that there's no added charge for this extra honor to salute a deceased veteran or member of the military service.

LEGION HERITAGE

Let's start off by correcting an error made in last month's post publication.  Fred Franz was the post's fourth commander in 1921-22, not the third as reported.

This error came about because of a strange line up for the first six former commanders in the 50th anniversary booklet issued by Post 56.  What's shown in the photo lineup on the wall near the club entry is correct.

Now, with that detail taken care of, let's continue this series based on post commanders of the past by featuring the third and fifth World War I veterans to serve in this particular position of past leadership.

Edwin W. Hellie served as the post's third commander in 1920-21. He was born in Trosky, Pipestone County, and graduated from Albert Lea High School and Dartmouth College.  Hellie served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in the coast artillery, mostly at Fortress Monroe, VA., during World War I.  He moved to Minneapolis about 1928, was an investment banker, and died on November 29, 1953.

Very little information is available about William Espeland who served as the fifth post commander in 1922-23.  He's not listed in the World WW I book based on Freeborn County citizens.  He was thus from somewhere else when he served in the armed forces.  The 1924 city directory says Espeland was a pressman at Trades Publishing Co.  He moved to St. Paul in 1935 or 1936 and died at the Veteran's Hospital in Minneapolis on Feb. 28, 1963.
