Commander's Message

Hi Everybody:

I think spring is finally here! April will be another busy month at the club with a lot of things scheduled. To start off we will be having the Past Commanders Dinner on April 2nd. All Past Commanders please plan to attend! We are looking for someone for the 2nd Vice Commander position for next year. If there is anyone who would like to help out please let me know. We will be honoring 50 and 60 year members along with announcing the Legionnaire of the Year on Sunday, April 19th at 4:30 pm at the club. Then of course on the fourth Sunday we will be having our Post 56 Breakfast. Please try and plan to attend as many events as you can.

As you all know we have had some bad months this past winter financially. They haven’t been bad but they haven’t been what we would have liked to had. We think that our busy months are ahead of us with the snow birds slowly returning. Please, if you can come up and support the club, everybody would really appreciate it.

Thanks to the VFW folks who put on a wonderful breakfast on Mar. 15th. What a crowd! There were over 350 people there that day. Thanks to David Olson and Bob Levisen for all the work you have put into the Vietnam Era Recognition display. Names come in from Vietnam Veterans everyday. So the display will only get bigger for the American Post Breakfast on Mar. 22. Be sure to stop in and see it. They said that they were going to do the same for the Korean War Veterans on Armistice Day in July.

My Commander’s project is going well. The metal for the walk-in-floor should be ready soon. We are still short of money so if you can see fit to help out I would really appreciate it. Just leave your donation at the bar the next time you are in.

If you haven’t noticed, the ATM machine is now installed in the bar area by the pull tab booth. I have been told that it is being used quite regular. This is a good addition to better serve our customers.

Thanks to all who helped with the Post Everlasting Ceremony. What a touching evening for all. I appreciate all the help I got for that event. Thanks to the kitchen staff for a wonderful meal and to the SAL members who helped out with the kitchen and serving duties.

Honor Flight will be leaving on May 2, 2009 with several World War II Veterans from Post 56 on that flight to Washington, DC to see and tour the World War II Memorial. If you care to donate to help the Veterans get to the Memorial there are forms at the club behind the bar. They thank you for your support.

We will be having the American Legion Baseball again this year. Jack Kortan has graciously volunteered to be the Coach/Manager this year. There will be a fund raiser later on to help support that so watch for the dates.

We are working on having a fair booth this year so if anyone is interested in helping out let us know. Also, we will be having food and entertainment at Farmers Market once a month this year so please watch for dates and stop up and help us out.

Thanks for supporting the club and keep all our troops in your prayers!

For God and Country
Commander Dave Mullenbach

There seems to be some sad confusion regarding the difference between the words wounded and injured.  This is certainly meaningful when they are used for the Purple Heart recipients who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One of the best examples of this confusion can be found in the Dec. 2008 - Jan. 2009 issue of Field and Stream magazine.  The cover said “F&S salutes wounded vets back home and in the field”.  Starting on page 57 (unnumbered for some odd reason) are six veterans of the Iraq War and their adjustments to outdoor sports after sustaining and recovering from serious wounds while serving in the armed forces.

To my way of thinking, a wound is defined as being caused by directly or indirectly (like an IED) by enemy action.  An injury to a member of the Armed Forces comes from anything else not caused by enemy action, like an accidental collision between two American vehicles, aircraft or vessels.

Just for the heck of it, I tallied the number of times these two words were used in this issue.  Injured was used seven times and wounded was only used three times.

However, Field & Stream isn’t the only part of the media which is somehow substituting the word injured for the more accurate term wounded.  One can only wonder if  there’s an attempt to change this part of military life by replacing the word wounded with injured.

Jim Doty, commander of Freemond Madson Post 447 of the VFW
wants to thank everyone who attended the special Vietnam Veterans’ Breakfast at the Legion on March 15.

Auxiliary News

Spring is just around the corner and we will be having our Spring Fundraiser.  On Wednesday, April 29th the Auxiliary will host a sandwich/salad luncheon. Janet Scherb will chair this event.  If you are able to help please give her a call.

On April 6th we will be doing annual reports.  We will meet at the Legion and could use a couple of typewriters and typists.

We sent 11 packages to our servicemen.  If anyone has current addresses we would be happy to pack more boxes.

Our next Auxiliary meeting is April 6th.  Please come and join us.  Hopefully Spring will be here and we will be done with ice and snow.

Make plans to attend the luncheon and bring a friend.

President Pat
